It's not that bad, lol. I don't notice it unless I stick my nose near the bottle. :grinno:

Oh yeah the joys of fishkeeping

So what does it mean when the test results for nitrites stay the same or change very little even after using prime at the 5x's dosage? Does that mean that more nitrates are being produced than what prime can detox? Just curious.

Also - i remembered reading that a little aquarium salt can help prevent nitrite poisoning of fish subjected to high nitrites to a certain degree - (Although it doesnt fix the underlying problem.)

How long after a WC should I wait to do another test?

Prime detoxifies nitrites which are still removed by the bacteria in your filter. The fact that prime detoxifies ntitrates is sensless, high nitrates are bad for prolonged exposures.

Yes salts will help with nitrite poisoning, Guess what "Prime" is made of?

I generally wait 30 minutes after the PWC to retest. Could be done sooner, but I just like the guarantee. :naughty:

Same results even after a 30% waterchange, I don't get it. :(

I do not thinkthe 5x extra dosage was needed, i would do 2-3x max and that is still to just save money. Ammonia toxicity is based upon pH and tempereature, there was a handy chart on some website.

"If temperature is > 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose"
Since you do not know the chlorine levels in your tap water, i would stick with the normal dosage.

You could use a bacterial supplement, the only one that works is BIO-SPIRA and even then you have to make sure it is from a reputable dealer like drfostersmith.com. That way you know it has been stored at the correct temperature.

My question is why did you buy the fish if you knew the tank was still cycling?

About 5-6 weeks ago I started cycling my 125g. A week ago I took a water sample to my LFS to test and they said that my nitrates were a little high but not enough to cause concern.

I asked the guy that did my test if I would be safe to purchase the jag and a slightly smaller oscar...he said I was but he recommended that I do a waterchange first so I had them put the fish on hold until Tuesday. I did a 40% WC the day before picking up the fish and another 30% WC on Thursday.
Yes I was anxious at getting the fish and I jumped the gun, I took the guys word that it would be okay to put the fish in. Call me a noob if you want but I have never cycled a tank properly before and this would be my first time at attempting to setup a tank correctly...obviously I failed.

"Repair" seems to believe that Stability works just as well. No LFS around here sells Bio-spira and it would cost me $42 for a 3oz package to order it thru DFS. It's also 90+ degrees here and my only day off is a bon delivery day(Sunday) If the product was delivered in the morning it would be sitting for 7-8 hours until I got home...maybe it would be fine maybe it wouldn't but I would hate to come home and find my $42 bag of bacteria at room temp and worthless
