I just cant find one anywhere

I can see this getting to be a bad habit. I hope my first puffer experience is a good one. I have very rarely ever lost a fish that wasnt due to violence so I hope my experience with the Abei goes good.

Does anyone have any info about the Abei that may be good...?

I understand puffer feeding, and clean water, and things like that. Just curious what will keep an Abei happy, live foods that may stimulate him (small crabs? ghost shrimp? Small crays when he gets bigger)

Also I see alot of conflicting info saying an Abei will be around 4 inches, some say 6 inches? Anyone have a big one?

^ as with any puffer, lots of decor and a tank with substrate is a good way to start... give them places to explore so that they don't get bored so to speak...

As for feeding, you don't necessarily have to go with the live route, just to prevent introducing any parasites... you can goto the frozen foods section of your supermarket and pick up things that your puffer will eat such as mussels, scallops, prawns etc...

Just be sure to de-frost in some tank water, and if possible add some Fish Vitamin water to the mix to help add to the nutritional value...

My tank has sand at the bottom, and some earth colored gravel and rocks mixed in currently for substrate. It looks sort of a like a river bed which is what I was trying for but it does not have much in the way of plants. I plan on going to the LFS tomorrow to pick up some plants and maybe some driftwood to put in the as well to make it more decorated and explorable.

As for food I was thinking of doing a mix of the both. Frozen will be cheaper of course, and then the occasional live shrimp then cray or crab as he gets bigger so he can hunt. Thats my plan at least right now. Hopefully that sounds good for a puffer noob.

check out your local fresh seafood market. I was able to get a bag of 2 dozen clams prefrozen for 3 bucks. Clams are good for keeping the teeth down

Def a good idea. I wanted to do that and just slightly open the clam up so the puffer has to bite and work it open to help with the teeth. That should work great, in combination with other things like crabs, mussels, shrimp, and whatever else. Then live worms, krill, and other frozen stuff.

Anyone ever used a piece of crab leg like what we would eat that way it has to pluck through it all. Would that be healthy and good for the teeth at the same time?
