I dont think the carbon has anything to do with your ammonia spike imo. Carbon doesnt remove ammonia so it cant be releasing any into your water.

Exactly what I was thinking, sounds more like the BB was damaged some how.

Im thinking one of three things can be leading to the cause of this now. I may be wrong i may be right, hopefully one of them help out and lead you in the right path.

1.) Stop using a garden hose to fill the tank, a lot of them come with a fungicide/mildew killer in them. That could be killing off your bacteria so you may actually want to put fresh carbon back in to remove any unwanted chemicals.

2.) Pouring in straight tap water without putting chlorine/chloramine remover in first may be killing off the bacteria on your substrate, a lot of bacteria will live on your gravel so killing a majority of it will make a difference.

3.) You mention that you are doing a water change everyother day. Dont vacuum your gravel every time because that can actually kill your bb by removing a lot of the waste it feeds on. You should only do about a 1/4-1/2 of your gravel each week.

Hope that helps out, and better luck with your fish!:)

thanks! im using sand so i havent done the gravel vac recently.. i thought the hose might have been a problem...but i do use it for my other tank which has no problems...also in the DIY sections people use the hose instead of the python. so i dont know if its that. i really think it could be the dechlorinator isnt having enough time to mix in before i start the filters.

Carbon removes chemicals and purifies the water. so it will not only remove ammonia it will also remove every thing eles.

When you clean/change the filters do you do all 3 at the same time?

If you go back to carbon in the filters I would wait two weeks then start chagning one ever week.

Also dump the hose and go with a python, I bought a small one and replaced the hose on it to make mine 200' it saved me a pile of cash over buying the larger python.

no i do not change all filters at once..i know thats a no no..in fact i havent changed any of the filters yet..they are like 2 months old and 1 month old
