I find this pretty cruel to be honest. Its just a fish you should have realised that cichlids have the potential to be jerks and thought about this. What you did is far worse than what the fish did, terrorizing it and scaring it literally half to death.

I am quite sure the FM did not "learn" anything, nor "knows" what he did - he was probably severely weakened due to the stress and fright, which allowed the JD to become dominant since the FM was now too weakened to defend itself. the firemouth didnt learn anything as cichlids have it in them from birth to be aggresive and protect there area,,,,,,
I had a problem with my jaguar and isolated the first time when he was 5inches then added him all fine for 6months!!!!then came the aggro again so isolation then Week later added him again only to find hes more aggresive,
if you have huge tanks then obviously your going to be ok because they have there space,,,
you can not hate a cichlid becuase its aggresive its your fault<as in the keepers>for bringing these fish together in small confinds!!!
if you want a peaceful tank only have either a male and female or a single cichlid
unless you have a huge tank well above 150us as this is my tank size and all my cichlids are gone now except my oscar pair
