I recently purchased a 220g aquarium for my Central/South American collection. I had several juveniles in a 75g that they were quickly outgrowing. I set up the 220g on Monday, treated the water with Aqua-safe and Prime, and added 3 very small juveniles on Tuesday afternoon. The juvenile red devil, red terror, and loesellei seemed to be perfectly happy in the large tank. Thinking that this was a good sign, I decided to transfer the new juveniles to a smaller tank and move the fish from my 75g to the 220g. I put a 5" JD, a 6" Texas, a 4" black belt, a 5" jag, a 4" ZZ FH, a 5" Salvini, a 9" cr. johanna, a 8" cr. Venezuela, and a 6" green terror in the 220g. Within an hour and a half the Venezuela was dead and the Salvini was doing barrel rolls. Since the Salvini seemed to be in the worst condition, I netted him and put him back in the 75g. I still thought he was a goner for sure. The rest of the fish just seemed stressed, which I expected. I turned off the light and headed to work. By the time I got home from work at 2am, only the jag and the dempsey were still alive! :( Surprisingly, when I got up this morning, my Salvini was still alive and seems to be doing well! :D This is the worst experience I have ever had in 12 years of fishkeeping. I really don't know what went wrong as I did the same thing I have always done when setting up a new tank. Maybe I'm missing something since this is such a large tank. The largest I had before was a 75g. This sucks!!!

u went wrong when u threw ur prize fish in after only 1 day. takes over a week to get the bacteria generated. i waited 10 days b4 i threw in 1 fish i cared about, and i waited almost 20 days b4 i threw in my prize. and this was considered rushed. take ur time when setting up new tanks, its only time. now u lost time that u went thru raising the fish. live n learn bro

did you take any biomedia from your 75 to put int he filter for the 220?
i would think that should have worked fine. Sorry for your loss man that really sucks.

I feel your pain. My Lionfish just died and it sucks!
THAT does suck! None of my fish were all that rare or expensive as your lion, but I was fond of them. I think I was just impatient and rushed the whole process. They were starting to get way too crowded and I just wanted to quell the aggression. I feel like such an idiot. I've been doing this long enough to know better. :wall::duh:

Lol it dident even start the cycle.. I add my fish after I see my ammonia is 0 nitrite is 0 and nitrate is starting to climb... No fish before that.

I just tested the water. Ammonia was nil, but the nitrates and nitrites were off the scale, and the pH was around 6. I did a 30% water change and added some crushed coral to bring the pH up a little. The two fish in there seem to be doing better already. Like I said before, I knew what I SHOULD be doing, I just lost my patience.

sorry to read about what happened
I did the similar thing a while back but not as large as a 200+gal
Rushing the cycling can be a problem.

Damn. That sucks man. Sorry for your losses. :(

I'd give it another week or two before you throw in anymore of your babies.
