I recently purchased a 220g aquarium for my Central/South American collection. I had several juveniles in a 75g that they were quickly outgrowing. I set up the 220g on Monday, treated the water with Aqua-safe and Prime, and added 3 very small juveniles on Tuesday afternoon. The juvenile red devil, red terror, and loesellei seemed to be perfectly happy in the large tank. Thinking that this was a good sign, I decided to transfer the new juveniles to a smaller tank and move the fish from my 75g to the 220g. I put a 5" JD, a 6" Texas, a 4" black belt, a 5" jag, a 4" ZZ FH, a 5" Salvini, a 9" cr. johanna, a 8" cr. Venezuela, and a 6" green terror in the 220g. Within an hour and a half the Venezuela was dead and the Salvini was doing barrel rolls. Since the Salvini seemed to be in the worst condition, I netted him and put him back in the 75g. I still thought he was a goner for sure. The rest of the fish just seemed stressed, which I expected. I turned off the light and headed to work. By the time I got home from work at 2am, only the jag and the dempsey were still alive!
Surprisingly, when I got up this morning, my Salvini was still alive and seems to be doing well!
This is the worst experience I have ever had in 12 years of fishkeeping. I really don't know what went wrong as I did the same thing I have always done when setting up a new tank. Maybe I'm missing something since this is such a large tank. The largest I had before was a 75g. This sucks!!!
