I'm sorry to hear.:( It'll take sometime to get used to seeing your tank without the fish. I know it did for me when I lost several of my favorite fish in one day.:(

Yeah. I lost my 13" L014 pleco last summer who one of those top favorites. I have a feeling he was rather old, so that gave me some solace, but I still miss him. He and our discus won us photo of the year on AC. For a pleco, he had a great personality. I think losing Norbert will be harder, so I suspect I will miss him for a very long time, and thinking of his death will probably always bother me.

Your reaction plus a something of a little face slumped in a puddle of his own tears would some it up for me. I was literally shaking as I realized what I was looking at. It's been like losing my cat. Very different than most fish I've lost.

I'm glad he has helped. It seemed like there was very little information out there on how to properly feed and care for a fire eel. So many would starve and never grow. I got him at a very skinny 18" at a LFS who knew to feed night crawlers, but would only feed him 3-4 a week!!! He was yet another fire eel who was at risk of starving to death. We let him stuff himself full of night crawlers, and then found people here that fed theirs shrimp. So then, for lack of any other knowledge, we assumed little earthworms and cut up krill were what we should feed the tiny youngsters we had gotten. Turns out that was the key.

I could never believe how tolerant of the little guys Norbert was. He was 18" and they we like maybe 7". He dwarfed them, and yet he never bothered them. I think him being in there and so bold, emboldened my little guys as they were never bad hiders.

Sorry, I could go on forever. Apparently, I'm finally able to really start talking about him, and its all just kind of flooding out....

I can imagine. I'm trying to convince myself to not go get another one. I still have two others, Captain Jack and Kelso, who are at least 24" themselves. However, they are probably at least 2 years younger than Norbert. Their heads are small in comparison to Norbert when was 24". I suspect he was still a little stunted then from being starved by the LFS owner. As they get older, they have developed more and more personality, and maybe I should just wait. However, don't be surprised if I end up with a little guy.

Now, we need to get you a larger tank! :)

Spiney eels are on a whole other level when it comes to forming a bond with the person that feeds them. I've notived similiar behavior in my tiretrack eel and I can imagine the anguish from losing such a massive beauty.

Godspeed, Norbert.

Jen, I am so sorry for you losing Norbert. I teared up reading this because after reading so many great things about him, and his last adventure he lured you into, I feel like I know him. I know how attached you are to him, as I have started to find myself growing attached to a certain fish we have. I know we don't have to tell you this, but you gave Norbert a great life, and did everything in your power to keep him happy and healthy, just as you would any pet you have. He couldn't have asked for more :)

I keep telling my non-fish friends this is not your typical fish. A few who have seen him really get that, but many just kind of have the attitude of 'we know you like your fish. Go get another one...' My family has been hearing me rattle on about him for the last two years and many have had to help take care of him at one point or another. They have been great about it, even though none of them are into fish...

Oh, Loves severums. About a little funeral for him... He is in my freezer at the condo we are moving out of. I was thinking about burying him in the yard at our new house under a rose bush or something. I'm not sure.

I bet you those roses will bloom beautifully and remind you of him everytime they blossom. :hearts:
