The lack of space I understand, but the noise? Ours are quiet, quiet as in you have to look at the out put tube to see if there is flow to find out if it is running.

The only noise issue we had was when trying to prime it, it left a lot of trapped air in the filter and that was irritating to listen to until it all worked its way out. That was solved by drilling a hole in the pick up tube just before the water line.
 
They are limited in bio capacity. I have found that if filled with biomax and cleaning the sleeve on a monthly basis they can effectively filter a moderate to heavily stocked 75g tank.
 
my 100 gallon is not to stocked, and keeps it so nice, the best but i made, and even if it took crap on me for some odd reason i would prob jump on the fx5 band wagon, a buddy has one and it works great
