I assume you know this, but they will eat ANYTHING that gets close enough. True Alligator Snappers get massive I have seen them 4 to 5 foot long in the zoo.

I have also seen them at least 3 foot across in the wild. I couldn't budge him from the bottom once he figured out he was coming out of the water. It bit clean through my fishing hook and I was left holding the shank of the hook and the barb was gone. Deffinatly one of the freaker experences I have had fishing. Good idea to have healthy respect for these things they really are strong.

Standard MFK size exaggeration, Just like all the 7 foot RTC and 5 foot arowanna. Link please to a 5 foot, or even 4 foot long SCL alli snapper, cause I'll call that zoo right now and buy it.

Why do you NEED one? do you have a heated pond for it? That is about what they need unless you can afford a 700 gallon tank. I have been bit by a big one and it is not fun. I do not think that these guys should not be considered pets or allowed to be kept by many people because they are 99.9% of the time unequipped to care for these beasts. Give me a few good reasons on why you NEED one so badly and I will help you out.

The Zoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The one they had was the biggest one I had ever seen, the thing was ancient and he was well over the average size. Reptiles keep growing tel they die, sadly he did die several years ago, some where between 3-5 years ago. I They have since replaced it with a much much smaller one. I have seen bigger ones in the wild then the one they have now.

Always wondered what they did with his shell.

NEED is always an interesting thing to hear when it comes to acquiring huge/dangerous animals like this. They are not that hard to find. Its one of those things where if you have to ask....

I agree completely.

No joke. The current record for them is 31 inches SCL. This means even in total body length they won't reach 5 foot, nor will you ever find a Alli snapper that's 3 foot across. This person is clearly telling tale tales, and any info from them should be taken with a handful of salt.

That being said, the body mass of an alligator snapper is much higher relative to their SCL size compared to other turtles. A 31 inch snapper could be 150lbs. They're big boys. I am of the opinion that anyone without a sizeable pond or absolutely huge indoor tank should not keep one.

I wasn't meaning across I was meaning from snout to tail. But he may very well have been smaller then I remember him. Its been a long time. What does SCL mean the term is not registering in my head.

How ever I have heard they can get up to 200 lbs. In fact I read that this morning when I went to go see what the maximum size was. Didn't really see the highest record size any where.

As to what I experience I have had with them in the wild. I have every bit of an understanding how strong and scary they are. I have met fishermen who have lost fingers, and I have hooked several. They are really strong, and very powerful. I respect their space and try to stay away from them. I think I may still have that hook in one of my tackle boxes if I ever stumble across it again I will take a picture. I wouldn't dream of trying to keep one.
