Why the hell would you want an alligator snapper? In Illinois they roam around lakes/ponds.

This isn't really accurate. In Illinois, they are almost entirely consolidated in rivers and streams that are tributaries of the Mississippi. Very few are found in lakes and ponds, but commons (which are everywhere) are very often mistaken for Alligator snappers.

I have worked with a beast of a snapper and as cool as it was, I would never suggest a private person keep it unless you are really serious about it and ready for one. If you can show that level of commitment, I have no problem giving you some pointers or linking to one for sale near you.

Trust me you don't need an alligator snapper, this isn't like your common snapper they are worse. If you think your ready and you have the time and money to care for it and wont neglect it then i will help you out just like snakeguy said. I don't recommend people getting dangerous animals unless they can take care of them and not get bored with them and let them loose. I didn't get my African rock python till i had the funds and the experience. If i got her when i wasn't ready i would have a 14ft monster right now but instead shes docile and now licensed in Florida. What i recommend you do is see if you can work at the zoo or volunteer and get hands on experience with an alligator snapper before you own it. That's just what i think you should do.

I've had gator snappers and commons, and I catch commons all the time. If you know what your doing, commons still pose a greater threat due to their mobility. An alligator snapper will do more damage if he gets you by far, but I would say there is a higher chance of injury dealing with commons.

I don't know about any of you, but I don't consider gator snappers as something that someone should do work with before getting one. Once you get the hang of it, they are much less dangerous then some of the snakes that a lot of people can buy right in their town/city.
