Mag 350 is a great particulate filter, I had green water in my 75 once and the 350 cleared it up in a few hrs. and if you run it off the sump it wont need too much maintainance, but I would suggest getting a 2nd micron cartrege so you can just swap them out, one in while you clean the dirty one.
yup:iagree:

Another undercover agent? :D

add an eheim 2217 - pack it with progressively finer foam, a ton of filter wool on the top and a final pad of jbl symec micro.

it will run for ages and your water will be like gin. clear and sparkling

The main reason i would not mod a AC is because of the design. If the water can not go thru the filter material it overflows onto the floor.

There is no flow over like other HOB style filters. Other styles will just flow over the filter cartridge if the mech media is to fine or clogs. But a AC water level will keep raising and spill out.

On the last thread about someone wanting to mod a HOB filter someone posted pictures of this. And how to fix it.

They basically cut the sponges and made it into a emperor style filter. So that the water will spill over top the sponge before the floor.

if for whatever reason your filter clogs (which i have NEVER seen), it will backflow towards the impeller chamber on the left, and out the slide as usual.
ther are people on this forum and others who have been running the same ac500 (ac110) for 15-20 years with no such problems. my oldest is only 8 years old, and running strong.

again. any problems you may have had with the ac110 were definitely user error. sorry

The regular sponges wont clog, well because they don't catch much.

But if you are trying to modifiy a AC filter to work and add a finer media in the sponges compartment it will spill out on the floor. There is not enough roomn for 500gph of flow to pour out beside the pick up tube. The rest gets to the floor in a hurry.

Feel free to test this by blocking off the spill way to simulate clogged filter media and see where the water goes. And please video tape it for us to see. Including you useing the mop to clean up.

again. you apparently aren't familiar with these filters. you may want to do a little research before posting things like this. helps you save face.
i have run filters with ONLY the sponge, and it absolutely catches debris.

furthermore, i use poly fill and other fine media in my ac110s, and again, no such clog or spillover.

while youre researching ac110s, you may want to research "user error"

good luck on your search. i hope you learn something :)

and rather then help you further derail this thread, i will leave it at that.

good luck noth to you and the OP

Good deal and as you mature thru the years in your fish keeping hobby you may also find out what your fanboy filter is really made of.

If the search function was working i would gladly fill this thread full of links to threads that picture exactly what I am speaking of.

I am not saying that the ac110 is a bad filter. It moves alot of water. But there are much better filters out there. That are versatile and you can change to adapt to changing tank conditions and needs.
