I need help... and lots of it. Information overload...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would save yourself some money and drop the substrate and get either pool filter sand or sterilized playsand. You can from time to time suppliment with root tabs. That will save you 50$. Also I agree on the filtration, a AC will do you JUST FINE.

eco complete is about 20 bucks a bag...that is all you need for a 20 long. It ends up about the same as playsand and root tabs. You just don't have to do all the rinsing!!!

Yeah I'm not getting the ones at my LFS they only carry males anyhow and IMO you shouldn't house two males together. They fight. They are sensitive this is true. From what I've read (and correct me gently if I'm wrong), After Initial fill up you really shouldn't have to do major water changes as the plants will eat up the ammonia, nitrite, and Nitrate so really only top ups are necessary? This seems odd to me but makes sense to a degree. I heard you're not supposed to remove Mulm... whatever that is. I also didn't add a timer... I'm going to need one with my schedule. Five hundred dollars seems like a lot... so I'll really have to save up. I'll save up 50 dollars a week and try to buy everything at once and hope its all still there. If not these things will come back.

http://www.bigalsonline.com/Aqualig....html?tc=default&purchaseOrderLineId=39692033 Would that strip work? Its "ideal" for salt water tanks... would it grow plants? "The Coralife S/W Aqualight T-5 is a double lamp fixture ideal for saltwater aquariums. Features a built in electronic ballast, sleek black aluminum housing, a highly polished reflector, acrylic lens cover and adjustable width tank mounts" It would be 59.98 instead of 77.05. And so what happens when IT IS depleted? IT doesnt LAST forever.

Then I use suppliments. I"m going to use Ecocomplete because I like the look and I want a planted aquarium substrate. The sand... would need root tabs that wear out in a few short weeks where as the eco complete lasts for 6 months. Then I can start using Flourish to suppliment as well as the fish waste that will naturally be produced. Play sand needs a TON of washing and you need A TON of it to plant in. I have it in a lot of my tanks and love it... but not for plants... they don't grow well in it IMO.

Just remove the True Actinic 03 Blue T-5 bulb with either another 10k or a 6700K. I would double check just to make sure this WASN'T a HO, if it wasnt I would get this one.

I wouldn't

Why no HO?

I have told this to you twice now...IF YOU aren't going to use pressurized Co2 YOU don't want HO for plants. You produce more light and the plants require, then the extra gets EATEN up by the ALGAE and NOW you have an Algae tank instead of a planted tank.
