I need help... and lots of it. Information overload...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Craigslist is dry in my area right now... heh there's a thirty on there for 350 and a slatwater set up for 1000 but that's it. I"m adding another filter to it but I already have it so I didn't add it. It works for up to 20 gallons too. And I got a bag of the Ecocomplete off of craigslist yesterday for 2 dollars so I just need the one now. I have wood too. got it from a guy that didn't know it lowered PH... as for rocks... still looking. We've got snow on the ground right now so I can't go anywhere to look at things. I'm going to swing my my LFS tomorrow and see what they've got they usually have small rocks for about a 1.29 a pound or Texas holey rock for 7.99 a pound but the holey rock isn't what I need or want so I'll look and see if they have anymore Slate or if they can order me some. I'm gonna see if they'll order me the rams too so I can jsut pay 9.99 for them instead of 64 dollars. I know they have Japonica and Oto's though. Won't add the Oto's till the tank is mature. I'll suppliment with Hikari Spirulia disks as well as fresh cucumber and veggies. My Bristle's love it but my Bristle's can't go in a 20 gallon... I may see if my LFS sells any of the plants I'm looking for. They had nana the last time I was in there but that's been a while (at least since I looked at their planted tank) they also had Java fern.... but those are links to it if I can't find it or if they can't order it. The tank is a bit expensive in my tastes too but If I can't find one at Petsmart (they're cheaper on empty tanks than my LFS) then I'll buy that one. I know they have them I just can't remember how much they are. Last time I bought one it was my empty 50 gallon. so... yeah... I do appreciate your help BTW

The only problem with not changing water is the mineral content of the water is used up by plants and fish. I guess you could BUY something to add to the water to replenish those things, but why not just use cheap water? I'm also very fortunate in having very hard/highly buffered water, so don't have to worry about it, as long as I change the water often enough. My fish seem to prefer it that way too.

I'm still going to do water changes just not as often and with RO water instead of directly from the tap as rams enjoy a more soft water than I've got here normally. I didn't see any other kind of rock other than holey rock. I kinda wNt petrified wood or large river stones.

If you use RO, you will need to invest in an additive. RO has no mineral content, and you will need to add some for the fish and the plants to thrive/survive. There are different blackwater extracts, but I've never used them.

I plan on using RO + Seachem's Equilibrium for my planted tank (with angelfish and other soft/acidic water fish.)
