I'm very glad to hear that your fish is doing better.

Justonemoretank, how does the epsom salt work? What is it that reduced the swelling?

Oh I'M SO GLAD! I've been thinking about this guy and wondering how he was doing. That's so great.

As for why it works, LOL, I don't know the scientific explanation behind it. However, my mom used to use it in a foot bath before she gave her customers pedicures, and even for herself when she got home from standing all day, to relieve swelling in the ankles and feet. As for constipation, I don't know of any human who's actually used it for that, but the back of the bag says you can. I'm guessing it's doing the same thing for the fish that it does for humans.

I use it as part of a salt mix which keeps my pH and KH elevated and steady, so all of my tanks have Epsom salt at 1 tablespoon per 20 gallons, anyway. It obviously doesn't hurt them at all. Here's a link to how and why I do that, in case anyone is interested:

Again, I'm so glad that this worked. It doesn't even sound like you'll need to medicate with anything else.

LOL here's a link to the Epsom salt council so you can see all the stuff Epsom salt is supposed to do, if anyone interested:

(I don't see its benefits for fish anywhere, but maybe I missed them.)

lol ^

Yeah I have salt in my FW aquariums too...

thanks! yeah, so upon closer inspection, the tail is noticably up off the floor-as oppossed to a normal tail relaxed on the floor- any thoughts as to why this is? do you think maybe its still adjusting-thats the best guess I can come up with!
justonemoretank?

Hmmm I'm not sure, really. He's been through a lot, so this could be normal... can you get a photo? Does anything seem swollen?

I'm at work right now, so it'll have to be tomorrow...nothing seemed swollen-he "shrunk" back down to his normal size finally!
it's as if there's air in his rear body to tail-he's about a 5in fish, I'd say the back 2in of him is off the floor...

Now that he's back to his normal size, go ahead and do a big water change when you get a chance tomorrow, and then see what happens. It may be that the Epsom salt took a lot of the fluid out of his body, so it reduced the swelling, but now he just needs to get back into some fresh water in order to let osmosis do its thing.

Edit: I would do a 30 or 40% water change, and then do another 30 or 40% water change eight or so hours later. This should remove a lot of the Epsom salt (I know someone will know exactly how much LOL I'm an English major for a reason) and do it gradually so that he's not going through huge changes -- the same reason you added the Epsom salt in half-batches in the first place.
