I need help settling a argument.

This lfs owner (like most all) isn't concerned about keeping his stock on a proper growth rate. That's what we try to do & it's a complete money pit. He's looking to flip for a quick profit. Proper feedings & wc's will fly in the face of maximizing profits..He should advise you that to get proper growth from your fish, a different mindset should set in

Your going to have a huge argument here because there are so many variable depends on type of fish, number of fish, and how many gallons. Basically how much and how quickly waste accumulate in the given amount of water will be different for everyone. I see people on here that do 70% water changes every other day. I am hoping that is an exaggeration otherwise it is wasteful and irresponsible. Some say they do it once a week others do it once a month I think both are right depending on there fish.

On one of my tanks I do 50% every two weeks on my other two tanks I do 50% every month. The ones I do monthly do have more algea but not to much my main display tank that I do every two weeks has no algea. Both tanks test fine as far as water quality.
+1 i do water changes on my tank sometimes twice a week even if my fish are hardy.. i wouldnt want to risk distribution of infections in my tank.. however, my cousin's tank has a single oscar in it.. they do not change the water frequently prbbly 2times/month, yet the oscar was healthy as it is..

All my tanks get at least 50% a week but my Cory breeding tank gets 33% every other day and my fry tank is 50% daily.

I am one of the 70-80% water change every 3-4 days guys. Any less frequent and my nitrates exceed 80. Massive frequent water changes help keep nitrates down and disease at bay by diluting and removing pollutants before they can ever build to hazardous levels. Sure they could live with less water changes, but I want them to thrive. Plus I feed heavily and have large and expensive stock.

I see high nitrates like inhaling smoke for us humans. It won't kill them right away but having consistently high nitrates for years will weaken their immune system making them more susceptible to diseases and shortening their lifespan.

I hire kids from my ecig/vape shop to help with WC because I travel so much. This way I can focus on enjoying the fish more and the guys can get some extra hours in.

I agree with this

Agreed, and like most things related to fish, there is no doubt that the toxicity of nitrates is species dependent, and even age/size dependent within each species. So there's really no such thing as too much clean water for a fish.

I'm a great believer in the the old Army Corps of Engineers dictum; "The Solution to Pollution is Dilution"

I don't think there is a golden rule of water changes based on percentage or how often. Shouldn't it be always based on how often it is needed for your specific water parameters? This is why I can't understand why people say should I change once every two days or once a month. You should be changes based on your parameter needs.

Very good points. I'd happily do 33% daily changes in all my tanks if I wasn't stuck using the 5 gallon bucket method, python adapters don't fit any of my first floor faucets so I get my daily weightlifting in when I do a 50% WC in my 75G.

Haha it's good for you! Carrying 5 gallon buckets throughout my adolescence up and down stairs for water changes gave me strong shoulders and traps!

... There may be an adapter you can find at the hardware store for your sinks :)
