All I know is that for the last 3 decades of fish keeping, my water change rate has kept increasing and as these wc rate increases, I definitely notice that my fish are growing larger, lives longer and are seldom sick. My practice now is 50% every 4 days and I believe I have finally hit the "sweet spot"

I do a 25 water change monthly, but I have a 750 and a 400, so those water changes take quite a bit of time :(

I would definitely be setting up a drip system or auto water changer with tanks of those sizes

I agree a retail setting is different than a home setting.

Fish are not in the store to stay there, they are just passing through. Different methods are utilized. Less food - less waste - less maintenance.

Fish can go a surprisingly long time without food.

My dad still breeds fish, he has a number of smaller tanks he does monthly water changes. He suscribes to the theory that everyone overfeeds their fish. Obviously his fish are healthy, spawning is usually a good sign.

I have seen many LFS feeding fish their daily rations...and let's just say it isn't a bounty. Many LFS (Not All) feed their fish just enough to keep them alive...and consequentially small (except discus). Maybe their is a correlation between small feedings, small waste amounts, thus lower bio loads which reduce the amount of water changes needed?

This is very true a fish shop feeds much less than a owner the reason for this is to keep the fish smaller before sale and to keep the fish very active as to attract buyers

Once people buy a fish that's when it's life begins and the owner wants to do the best they can for their new baby example good food and good water

If anyone asks the fish shop guy to test his water next to ours then our in most cases is better than most shops
Not all cases but most
