I need some blue in my 180 gal SA Community

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both blues I'm thinking of are not SA's, and i'm not sure how the aggression would be for some of your fish. That said, probably my favorite CA blues are Vontehillos (Carpinitis) and Zonatums (Vieja).

Not sure where to point you from an SA perspective though... good luck on your search!

Very beautiful fish, hardy, not shy at all and relatively peaceful too. I would like to keep another pair by themselves in a smaller tank at some point.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely consider them as an option.

Although not all blue, The Australoheros Oblongum get alot of blue in the dorsal and spangling. Males get 5-6". Mellow fish that play nice with others.

And if CA are included, the Honduran Red Point Rio Danli is very blue.

I'm a big fan of many of the CA cichlids, especially the Vieja group. Unfortunately they won't fit with my water parameters, and most vieja get big and snotty.

Thanks for that. Those are some gorgeous fish. I'll check them out.

Not really what you're looking for, but i'd add 3-4 more L134's! Much more lively in groups! :)

I may add some more in the future; @ $5o each though, that's a bit more than I want to spend right now.

Would love to, but my temps are in the mid 70's and I have 312 watts of T5 light. Additionally I think my tank would be a bit too intense for some discus. The group I have is pretty rowdy....especially the spotted silver dollars. They are on turbo 24/7.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

Other non-SA fish:

Electric blue jewel cichlids. Just in case you broaden your search. They are mean as hell, but stay pretty small.

Or you could probably get away with some larger dithers like rainbowfish. Bosemani or turquoise. Or maybe giant danios.

There aren't a lot of SA cichlids that I can think of that have a lot of blue and haven't been suggested already.

A friend of mine just saw this post and offered a group of 5 Electric Blue Rams. Really spectacular little fish....emphasis on little though. His group is full grown and are smaller than a standard GBR. He wants to get rid of them, ironically enough, because his blue jewels have been beating the crap out of them.

Very tempting.
