I Need This Gar!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the lifespan being longer than being culled.

nice!!!!! i love SBs!^_^ you should get him!! awesome looking gar

and if the fish is healthy...and functions properly (moving breathing pooping ext.).....than why is it better to kill it?...strange thinking, and i hate when people say to kill a fish that is perfectly healthy...deformed or not.

um...what is your definition of "functions properly"...if it is what you have listed parenthetically then you have a strange and very limited listing of proper physiological function. in many cases these fish have a lot of internal issues that are not obvious externally (unfortunately this is often not even determined until necropsy).

and saying "it's lifespan is longer than being culled" is an almost complete non-statement.

if these fish are naturally produced and someone buys them and they seem to do ok (don't appear to struggle, etc etc) then go for it...i just hate to see these being promoted as worth more or even encouraged, especially with gars. i've always hoped that gars didn't slip into the obscene commercial mediocrity we see with a lot of other fishes including polys, arows, or even goldfish. luckily their spawning requirements will hopefully prevent many short-bodies from being produced, at the same time it's pathetic that they go for such high prices.

good luck with the fish if you choose to purchase it--

So that monstrosity is selling for 400.000 yen roughly $5,000.00 US dollars.... Really????? and there are people that would actually buy the thing? That is just sad... My bets are it is dead in less than two years and some sucker is out a whole lot of money.... And for what really? A "regular" Spatula in good shape and well cared for is an animal of awesomeness that is indescribable in many way.. This thing is a puddle of mistakes that has to live it's entire life in torture in it's own body.. It is sick what humans do to perfectly good animals just to make a buck or two... But then Barnum was totally right... A sucker (Idiot) is born every minute that will buy anything (or into anything).....

Like you Solomon I was hoping to never see gars slip down this path... Well it looks like now it has been figured out how to make these. Just as it was found out how with the Polys. And I'm sure they are being made purposely and not just an aberration within a batch... This single fact makes all of it so much more difficult to swallow..

I really only have one thing to say about this with Gar.... :yuck::barf:

Wow!
Some people get very aggressive in these forums!
The said fish is not to everyones taste. OK We get it!

Big-in where the fish is being sold is one of the most reputable monster fish shops in the WORLD.
Most of the larger fish they sell are fish that they have travelled the country buying from people who can no longer house them.

The history of this fish is most likely unknown, but it is large and no youngster. The fact is it is large, alive and in an tank right now, so what ever has been done (or not done, none of us know) is done.
So what? Take it out right now and cull it?

Before people go off on their high horses, no-one knows if this was "man made" or not, so lets not get too aggressive huh? Some people like SB fish others not simple.

Well said! Thanks for sharing a unique specimen.

some comments in red above:

1- first highlight - not sure why this information is relevant. even "well-reputed" stores will still cater to demand (as reflected by apparent pricing).

2 - second highlight - never said it was man-made or not...i did comment on the travesty of the situation if it indeed has moved on to man-made short-bodied gars.

understand that there are people on here who are very passionate about this group of fishes, for some people it is their actual work/profession. others are dedicated gar-keepers who care very much about the group of fishes and their proper care and information being shared. this is enthusiasm beyond that of just collecting a deformed individual because it's short-bodied.

in the end, to each their own...BUT if you can't take the criticism don't post in the forum--

Hi.
1st of mention that Bi-in being reputable, I was just responding to how some comments may have looked like they were aimed at the Seller of the fish.
Yes, I agree they are a business, and yes they will put a premium price on something that there is a big market for that is not so easy to find. Just like any business would.
I just wanted to make it clear that they were not some evil scientists creating oddballs.

2nd, the "man made thing was actually aimed at user "Pejelajarto" comment - "It is sick what humans do to perfectly good animals just to make a buck or two...".
And I stick by this, no-one can say if this was human interaction or not.

And I also understand your comment about "dedicated Gar keepers".
I am a dedicated Polypteridae enthusiast, and have spent a lot of time, money and effort collecting every possible species there is, and succeeded.
When it comes to Bichirs, ALL of my fish are pure natural form. I have no Shortbodies (unlike most Bichir keepers) as I don't like them simple as.
When someone posts their pictures of their SB in the Bichir forum, I and most other keepers are a little cautious about throwing "evil, cruel, torture" accusations around.

And finally, I can take criticism here, the fish isn't mine, it is in a store. I nearly posted it because I LIKE IT!

Thanks, TGM
