So yesterday I put an ad on craigslist stating that I wanted to trade a guitar for two 55g fish tanks or bigger. I got a call a couple hours later and the guy stated that he had 2 fish tanks with all of the equipment needed, one of which was currently running. He also said that he had two Albino Red Oscars and a Pleco that was rather large. So I packed up my gear and my friend Ryan (eatyoualive) and I went to meet him. When I arrived, it was the slummiest, most beat up white trash house I've ever seen. His daughter running around outside with no shoes on through an old rusted out truck, two pitbulls tied up, the lot. But I digress. I go inside to look at the tanks, and what I see almost made me want to hit the guy in the face. The water was completely brown and the filters weren't even running in the tank. It now seemed like I was getting the short end of the stick, but I felt like if I didn't do this, these fish were going to die. He also said that he had been feeding them cichlid pellets alone for 5 and a half years. The second tank was in his garage and clearly had not been ran for months. So I manned up and decided to take the sacrifice for these fish's lives. I brought them home and immediately took them out of the water and put them in a 35g bucket with an airator (sp?) for the time being. Picking them up was like picking up dead weight. They simply had no will to live at this point. I put them in the bucket and added some Stress Coat + to see if that made them any more lively, which it did help. Long story short, I cleaned up the tanks and have one now running well in my room. The fish are much more lively and I've started changing up their diet already. I decided to feed them some celery today and they were quite interested in it. I'm oping for the best, and also a bigger tank for these monsters to get into.

That was good of you to do that.

Both the tanks are 55 gallons?

Yes. The one not in comission has a leak near the bottom so I'm going to reseal the whole thing. After I get more money, I plan on buying a new filter for the one I'm running now and then selling them with the other re-sealed tank.

Very nice! Pellets should have all the neccesary vitamins etc. to keep the fish healthy. But if w/c's arent done at all and the tank isnt maintained they will do poorly. Nice save! But they need a bigget tank.

Thank you. :)
I plan on making the tank more elaborate, but I had to get the oscars in something clean and healthy before they died.

And I know they are big. I'm working to get a 75 or maybe a 125, but being a 17 year old working 2 jobs and making just enough to afford a truck payment and gas (Chevy Silverados are killers on gas) is a bit binding.

THANKS FOR MAKING MY DAY...always so good to hear of good things that someone does... not because he has too but because he cares... and i hope your good fortune returns two fold... they look great

Thanks a ton Liz! They're already looking so much better than they did. The one with less orange had grey splotches on his head and both had yellow stains on their whole under-bellies. Both of these things have cleared up. And that's just within 24 hours!
