I spawned my Ghost knife!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try methylene blue... pretty much a standard treatment for fish eggs... It will destroy your beneficial bacteria though, so don't use it in your main tank.

some have fungus and almost all of them have turned solid white, some are still clear. Which ones are bad ones? it's the white ones right? anyway i sucked up all the fungused ones and rest are back tumbling so lets see how it goes. I just want 1 to survive! :)
well i pickuped all the eggs, even the dirty ones that was in the sand.

That's exactly why you treat with methylene blue... it prevents fungus from growing on the eggs. It's really cheap too, probably no more than $4 at your LFS.

Even if this fails you have done something awesome.

about 20cms male slightly bigger.
2foot tank with sand substrate. no idea water paramater (not important i think as long as it's clean undisturbed water). it used to live in tanganyikan tank and recently moved to tank a tank that is malawi condition.
had them for around 3years.
they were moved from 4 foot community tank with other ghost knifes as I saw some strange behaviour and bam.. after 1 months of move and 1 week after introducing a girl..
it is raining season in sydney so that could have helped.

eggs are clear with white center. it seemed to have some sticking agent as it is stuck on glass, filter, filter wire etc.
i had second female in with it and it seemed to ate most of the eggs as it was fat last night and there were lot more eggs!
will be getting egg tumbler tonight. pics coming.
ps. so far I have seen this behaviour plenty of times in my 4 foot community tank but i guess tank mates ate them all. overall i think the breeding this fish is easy but obtaining a pair might be difficult.

if i can successfully raise the fry, i'm going to try sell it to lfs and few months later i will be putting full documentation on web.

congrats on the spawn. it is exciting to pull off something that few other have. however in my honest opinion neither of the tanks you listed are big enough for a black ghost knife, let alone several.

mouse.gifwow that is incredible.. i cannot wait to see all the babies... good job!!!

It's funny, whenever I see someone spawn some rare oddball fish, it's always in a tank that's not "ideal" for them and the guy NEVER knows the water parameters... there was a guy on here that spawned ornate bichirs like that too. Didn't do anything special at all. I HATE YOU ALL! :grinno:

Seriously, congrats, even if you don't get any fry this time you will in the future.

well only few eggs left. if my eyes weren't decieving me, i swear on some of the remaining eggs the yolks have turned into aa maggot like shape and it is ever slightly moving/twitching...

i've taken some photos so i'll up them soon.

oh well i'm not a complete newbie, i have been in the hobby for 10 years.
during the years, i have noticed water condition isn't important as long as it is clean.
i have kept elephant nose in tanganyikan for 3 years and my current ghost knifes when they were 10-12cm, all 5 were in the same tank.
i found this method works for me. spend money on equipments or overfilter, get a quality uv (this is a must for any aquariums).

one thing i can admit, i have lost over 10k worth of fish, experimenting different combinations etc.

oh golden rule, apart from feeding, don't disturb your tank :)
