could also try a drain screen, like the ones use to keep hair from going down your shower drain

or the type you see in public restrooms or on a sink dispose-all to keep the drains from plugging

so overall, what would be my best bet to go with? overflow, milk crate, wire mesh i would think will rust which wouldnt be good or sponge?

a screen set off from the intake would not trap a fish

and now you're in for a real treat, my amazing MS paint skills

lines representing water flow, red being if a fish for some reason swam directly in front of the intake

just tossing around ideas

im sure there is something that a aquaria company makes with this in mind

i was thinking something more along the lines of this.......
btw i dunno if ive ever used ms paint so bear with it lol

black is intake piping red would be the little thing to keep everything out, i would think there wouldnt be as much if any suction if i did something like that

im thinking a temporary fix until i figure a good way, use a 2 liter coke bottle cut the top off, make 1/4" slits through the sides vertically all around it and fit it to the intake piping

the other way is cut off both ends stuff it with a sponge or filter media and stick it on it,

think that oculd be a temporary fix?
