A sponge will also serve as more filtration. You will just to remove it and wrinse it out occasionally.

I don't think a sponge will work it will just be sucked in.

well i figured it out, i made an overflow out of an old piece of shower wall lining, im not to sure what its called, but its some type of flexible plastic, i cut little slots in the top, stuck it up against the intake piping and the side of the tank and it actually sucks itself to it and the only water going into the intake to the filter is coming over the top of the overflow thanks for all the ideas guys!!
