Hey everyone,
I am here trying to get a handle on a problem with my 55g tank. Currently I only have platys, emerald corys and a pleco. I am planning on discus in this tank after I had it setup, platys were my setup fish before moving to discus, but need to get this problem fixed before spending $50 a fish.

In the last week or so, I have lost about 10 platys, All levels are perfect so thought it might of been a parasite problem. I did a few 10 to 60% water changes, added a UV sterilizer and did some meds (mela fix) before I started to really think parasites.

Now, I am running a treatment of cupermine (41 drops, 41 again after 48 hours and am now waiting the 14 days out before turning the UV back on and placing the charcoal back in) But, what I am worried about is that since adding the cupermine I have lost 3 fish, all platys. Is this normal, and am I doing the right things? Or do I have another problem going here?

I have noticed some SMALL white bug like things in the bottom of my tank, problems started not long after sighting them for the first time. They are like grains of salt in size.

Setup: 55g long, 9watt UV, aquaclear 70, gravel (no UGF), 15/20 live plants, 200w heater (kept at 82F).

Any other info I can provide to help figure this out, let me know. Will do my best to reply with it.

Thanks!

I just noticed that I posted this in the wrong area. SORRY! Any way to move it to the "Freshwater Diseases and Health Issues" area? Or should I just repost there?

The treatment I am doing is cupramine, forgive me, been up all night.

The small withe bugs may be copepods which are harmless. But the first thing to do is test your water. With the second, is to do some major research before attempting discus. When was the last time you changed your water???????

I did a 50% a couple days before adding the treatment. so, about a week now. And plan on doing another 50-80% as soon as the 2 weeks for the treatment is up, which should be august 8th.

Just tested water: Ph-7.0, Nitrite-0ppm, ammonia-0ppm, Nitrate-2ppm

The nitrate I only scored a 2ppm because it looked like a darker yellow, not really an orange which is the mark of 5ppm. But, it might be closer to 1 or 0ppm because right after a big wc it is about the same color indicated now.

Well, after over a week with no deaths, I lost 2 the last 2 days. Treatment is up and did the water change, fired up the UV. Still noticed that a few of them are rubbing on rocks once and awhile and have white feces. Is my treatment of cupramine not doing the trick. Should I do another round? Try something else?

Thanks for any advice because I am out of ideas. I thought about doing a LOT of big water changes, but, where I am at (town home) it will cause the office to investigate. Thank God, I am moving soon! But until then, any other ideas?

from my experience, rubbing on rocks might be a sign of ick. the white feces is what one of my fish has right now. i heard that could be of an internal parasite.

I read the symptoms of ick in one of the sticky posts. It does seem to fit. Should I just do the salt treatment recommended or, should I get some sort of meds at the store, if so any recommendations???

I am not 100% sure off if what I have in there can take high salt levels. I currently have: 8 baby (1 inch or less) platys, 3 emerald cory cats & 1 pleco (had a lot more but this is what is left :()

careful with some ick meds cause some of them are pretty nasty to other fishes. im just new to fish keeping and i have had these 2 problems already. i got tetra's parasite guard for the white poop cause that could be a sign of internal parasites. i have 2 knives in there so i only use half dosage just in case. as foir the ick there are alot of post on here tellin you how to cure them. hope this helps a little
