I think I need some help: Parasite problem I believe.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I got some of the parasite guard tabs, can I also add some aquarium salt with them?

I already have the tank at 82, I do not feel ok making it any hotter as I believe it is as hot as my guys can tank right now.

Well, After finding out that that I can not find the parasite guard after calling about 20 places. I went to a professional LFS and after a lot of questions, answers and talk, I went with their recommendation of using QuICK Cure. I am doing a treatment of 1 drop per 2 gallons everyday for 7 days. The normal is 1 drop per gallon for 3 days, but since I have cory cats and pleco, it was thought that half dose for longer was in the better interest for everyone.

So far, I have not lost anymore fish and they are looking better. Will report back if there is any other problems, but so far, so good.

i always add a little aquarium salt in my water
some people dont like it but i heard from a friend that it works for him (alot of fish experience). i lost 1 gourami but after the parasite guard, all the fish are eating well and no white poops left hehe. good luck with your fish treatment

It's not commonly known as Parasite Guard. Nowadays, it's commonly referred to as Parasite CLEAR , by Jungle Labs. And YES, you can add salt with Parasite Clear/Guard.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks! I will pick up some of the parasite clear (now that I can find it lol) soon and do a round of that if nothing is better by the end of the 7 day QuICK Cure treatment. I lost yet another baby platy today, ugh, so will see.

At least my aquatics first aid kit is getting built up for future problems that might arise. Just wish I could get this figured out so I can move on to discus in my other tank. I am getting those "I GIVE UP" feelings thanks to this!....

I am taking the one I lost to the LFS in the next day or 2, as my buddy there said he could take a look at it and try to figure this out more. I got a plan, just hope it works.. :(

Anyways, thanks for the help! I will be adding some salt once the quick cure is up. Oh, and also, I bumped up the temp from about 81-82 to 84-85.

Thanks again.

Also, quick question... I have 3 cory cats and a pleco in there. All of them have been through this from the beginning and are still here. Everyone that has died has been a platy. Could this whole thing just be something with them? Why have I not lost a cat yet? Not really sure if it matters, but it is something I was wondering about.

dont give up...
dont forget to take the filter media out when you add the meds
i also lost a needle nose gar, a pleco and blue gourami but since i put meds in, all seems well.
also i read something about garlic and how it makes fish want to eat, which could help. sorry im a noob still at fish keeping and cant really help too much hehe

I did take out the carbon before treatment, but I still have the bio media and UV going.

Trust me I am thankful for any input! I have had fish tanks for near 20 years and this is the first real health problem I have had, but then again this is the first time I am really getting into it with bigger tanks. So, It is something I have to learn, and I am willing to. Just hard when you try try try try and they still end up dying. BUT, I will keep trying, no matter how much I want to give up!

Sorry about your tank troubles, I really do not wish that on anyone.

I have read about garlic and wondered if I should have some on hand (for this problem and future ones), but I'm not sure how to use it. Do I mince some up and throw it in? Or, do I get an extract and mix with the food? I have heard of people doing both so not sure....

Side note, is the start right crystals by jungle labs a good product? I currently use kordon novaqua+ but am able to get the crystals in bulk for a lot better deal than the novaqua+ in a gallon.
Also, If the fish seem stressed can I add some (of novaqua+ or the crystals) to help, or will that mess with the treatment?

not sure about those crystals cause i use stresscoat when i do my WC and adding new fish. Ive also read about some ppl buying garlic extreme or selcon they add to the food. the garlic extreme is expensive and smells bad. I will try mashing a small amount of garlic with the floating pellets tonight ill keep you updated...

my fishes went nuts over the food...i mashed a little garlic and added the parasite guard(very little) and soaked it...they even ate smaller pieces of garlic lol
hopefully this will solve my parasite problems
