Stopped off at a store for feeders on the way home from work and there was this really nice two foot savannah in a tank there. This guy was much more active than the savannahs that I'm used to seeing,I mean it was all over the tank. The staffer let me handle it and it didn't hiss or resist in any noticeable way,I was hooked right from there but I don't want to just jump in without doing a little research first and the asking price for this monitor was high also......I've seen little six inchers at shows but I think I'd like something a little bigger, and possibly less delicate?,or maybe I should start off with a different species altogether. So,what do you all think?

Sav's are great to start with if you can handle their size (which comparatively is not bad). Feed more crickets/ roaches/ mealworms than mice and keep its water clean and cage hot. its about as simple as that.

agree ^
if hes already tame thats an amazing start, as thats the most common problem i have come across with owners (and myself) is taming them up.
so yep, if u can handle the housing u should be good to go.

i adore mine. he will never get full size i dont think, infact im not sure he will get any bigger than his 1.5ft hes at now.
when i first went to see him i was told he was 8 months old and he was 6". turns out he was 2years old. and he was EVIL!!!
sine iv had him he has never biten or gone to bite and never tail whipped at the glass or me.
iv only held him when iv let him out and had to put him back in. hes slowly but surely getting to the handling stage and loves to sit out and watch everyone as soon as anyone walks in the room.
its so rewarding that es come this far as from what iv been told pretty much once they r nasty at a certain age u will never really get them to tame. yet when he comes out hes not phased by me in the slightest and will wonder round me just fine.
he even likes my lil one. (had to add the pic lol hes just so cute)

yeah, mine is really food aggressive but as soon as he realized that he can't eat my hand he calms down and will let me hold him.

Sounds good guys and nice shot Chloe....I also like Niles but I think their size and nastyness puts them out of consideration.

thanks hun :-) its nice to see them together.

lol mines not food aggressive, more like a puppy. runs around in circles till he gets it then just dives in lol

dog food is a little too fatty for them. They will eat it but it would be like eating a greasy hamburger for every meal.

i personally use high quality cat food for protein in the diets of my reps. i would imagine it would be okay for the savannah.

monitors are a very engaging and rewarding species.

i feed regularly eggs, locusts and meal worms. then every now and again 1 or 2 spoonfulls of cat food and pinkie mice.
cat food and mice r just as a treat/filler.
