i feed regularly eggs, locusts and meal worms. then every now and again 1 or 2 spoonfulls of cat food and pinkie mice.
cat food and mice r just as a treat/filler.

agree. that is what my monitors get too. I also sometimes feed them live shiners in their water bowls but this is more of an enrichment for them to catch them.

lol to make them move u mean? i think mine would just look at it and think "F this for a laugh, im going back to bed" lol

^^^ Haha I think mine would do the same.
mine are also both small for there age at almost 2 years of age my larger one is just over 2' and my smaller one is at a foot an half. Both mine are very tame and love to be held. I used the bath tube to help tame them down. They are I would say the best larger starting monitor to go with and very easy to house like others have said. One key thing is to not over feed as they can get over weight easily since all they love to do is EAT an SLEEP. Keep it nice and hot with a large water bowl that they can fully fit in as mine love to lay around in there water. You will love them and one of the easiest to tame. I will tell you a nile is not a monitor that you want to start out with. The size alone is hard for many and then the temperament to back it up is something you need to have some experience with I would say.

Monitors are very smart and a great animal to watch and draw a lot of attention at the size they get. Im going to be upping my monitor collection shortly after I finish the enclosure for a argus! Very excited about it!
Best of luck and I know you will enjoy it.

Good luck with the argus project...BTW,what is that car in your avpic?

Varanids shouldnt be eating crap like dog and cat food, they need a staple of crickets and roaches then should be fed lightly fried chicken and beef cut in to apropriate sized cubes or strips and scrambled eggs fried in olive oil for healthy fats.

I currently own a Varanus Gilleni, might get another one sometime this year but ive kept rescued lace monitors in the past.

cheers-

I also agree that no types of dog food should be fed to them I have heard cat food is better but I still have never and never will feed mine dog or cat food. Mine get a mixture or chicken, beef, eggs, crab and roaches and some different treats like pinkies.

The car is my Pontiac GTO. My two hobbies get pricie being cars and fish/ herps

I don't think I'll be offering dog food either when I do get a monitor...I thought that was a GTO,awesome car,a guy at work has one.I've been a GM/Pontiac man for quite a few years now.I had a GrandPrix for a while and now I have an SSEI Bonneville but I think my next car will be a certaim two door Chevy.:D

I always thought that supers were a bigger type of mealworm.

Both would be fine for younger monitors but as they get bigger they would make short work of them being so small, superworms are bigger but I have never used them before. I like dubia roaches as my insects of choice for monitors.
