Hello; Some things occured to me on the way to the dentist today. Consider, if you will, that the cat and grandma have equal rights. Cat elevated to human rights to be specific.
Scene one: Both cat and grandma are diagnosed with terminal cancer. Grandma has a DNR order on file and is allowed to pass without extreme measures being taken to keep her alive. The cat, having not signed such an order and having equal rights, must be given all care possible and kept alive on machines if needed.
Scene two: Both cat and grandma are diagnosed with a serious issue that reduces quality of life. Both will have to tough it out to the bitter end in many places. Cats can no longer simply be "put out of their misery" because they have equal rights with people.
Scene three: Picture, if you will, some sort of widespread disaster. More specifically one that results in a food shortage. There is just enough food to keep the humans alive, but not the dogs and cats. The animals have equal rights so it becomes a crime equal to starving a person if the dog and cat are not fed equal to the people. Grandma or the cat? If you pick grandma, after the disaster you go to prison for animal neglect.
Scene four: You have a dog and a tight budget. The vet tells you the dog needs an expensive treatment. You can no longer have the dog put down as an option. You go bankrupt. Actually this one may be closer to current reality than all the others.
Need I go on?
