I want a snake!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i was on 1 also... and i bought 2

He said he wanted snake he could handle. GTP doesn't really fit that bill.

I think the feeding concerns with balls seem to be overated. If you get one from a good source and keep up good husbandry you should be fine. Keep in mind that there is no snake that "likes" being handled - some just tolerate it better than others.

I've always read that ball pythons are notorious for having feeding problems but so far that hasn't been the case with mine. I bought my male at around 2' two and a half years ago, he is now a little over 3' and with exception of one time (during a shed) has never refused a meal. I only feed him frozen/prekilled and very rarely handle him however he is as docile as can be. :)

I cant afford a $700 green tree python as much as I would like one, budget is a factor. I found a good place to get them online because no one around has any good CB balls. Does anyone know of another online place to get snakes?

I'm a nut for ball pythons...as someone stated earlier about balls having a bad rep because many are imported is right on. Buy captive bred and you'll be fine.

They can be picky about cage security, temperatures, and humidity. The type of enclosure you use will pretty much dictate how your ball keeping experience goes. Glass tanks don't hold heat or humidity and are not very "cozy for balls because they are so visible, even with lots of hides. Plastic caging like Vision, AP, precision, or rack setups are ideal for ball pythons.

I'll always advocate the dwarf boa species as great first time snakes for people who don't want a stinky, squirmy colubrid like a corn, rat, or kingsnake. Central American, Hogg Island, Mexican boas stay relatively small (get a male, they'll get to 6 ft MAX) and are very tolerant to husbandry. I've got a 2 y/o mexican boa in a 20 long aquarium, I've fed VERY conservatively to keep her growth slow.

That'd be ideal....cheap, easy, holds heat, humidity great.

You can use sterilite or rubbermaid tubs. I use 15 qt tubs for hatchlings, 28 qt for juvis, and 41 qt for adult.

Easiest way to heat the container would be to use Flexwatt heat tape controlled by a dimmer or better yet a good thermostat like a Herpstat or Helix.

I know of a good site for reference, check your PMs.

I use the rubbermaid tubs (74qt I think) for my ATB and they do hold heat and humidity pretty good.

u paied 350 and 650 for my 3 niver ones.

i would go eit rewd tailed boa
