I want a trimac, got a question

i dont think you have to worry about the trimac as much as the jag. if the trimac messed with the jag it would be toast. make sure you get a pure trimac as you are more likely to have success keeping that community you want. the trimacs like from petsmart are lowgrade flowerhorns and ime were much meaner then the pure tri.

I think if kept with large equally aggressive fish, and given an adequate territory you should be fine, a trimac with jags, motags, carpinte, Red Devil/Midas should work out as long as you give each fish the space it deserves. Target/dither fish cant hurt either.

next week I'm setting up a 180 with a trimac, mota, carpintis, and a festae. Im expecting it to work just fine. Still thinking about what dither to use. I personally think that silver dollars look stupid. Anyone have any other ideas for ditthers?

Yeah if I do this I'll do it right, no petsmart mutts etc. I'll probably order some from Ken or Jeff, along with the jag and argentea hopefully.

Please keep us updated on how it works out. I will probably use mad barbs/cigar sharks, I have 2 already and they look pretty cool, plus they're fast. They can supposedly get over 2' long but I've never seen one much over 16". Convicts supposedly work good too, I plan on having a few in my comm to hopefully spread the aggression around.

fishguts-I thought so-as far as the Petsmart Trimacs being lowgrade FHs.
He is right petsmart trimacs were just lowgrade flowerhorns and from my obesrvations of a buddys tank are super aggressive!! I would go with the pure trimac like he stated, thats your best bet.

Try getting an Escondido-a lot more attractive-I like your list I think it will work-just have a lot of caves. Get the Trimac an inch smaller than the others.

It will just depend upon your Trimacs attitude, but I think the chances of it working are not good. I just had to remove my trimac from my 220 because of it's aggressive nature. It was growing out with a group of midas, red devils, grammodes, and escondidos. It was by far the meanest fish I have ever owned. It would not harass other fish, it would just bite chunks out of them. If any other fish got within a foot of it it would charge them and bite. Then it would spit out a chunk of flesh and scales. All of the fish were around 5 inches and I see no way of the trimac getting along with anything especially onces it's big enough to kill the others.

I also think they are much more aggressive then Jags, someone mentioned above that a jag would kill a trimac. I don't see it. Jags defend a small territory. If the tank is bigger then there territory you can almost always successfully have tankmates. My trimac cruised the hole 220g tank attacking anything that wasn't smart enough to stay at least 1 ft away from it. If you want a trimac get a 75g and keep it by itself. That's what I'm doing
