I also think they are much more aggressive then Jags, someone mentioned above that a jag would kill a trimac. I don't see it. Jags defend a small territory. If the tank is bigger then there territory you can almost always successfully have tankmates. My trimac cruised the hole 220g tank attacking anything that wasn't smart enough to stay at least 1 ft away from it. If you want a trimac get a 75g and keep it by itself. That's what I'm doing

I am with you on this one.

Funny, I had one that ruled for 3-4 years one day my Male Red Devil got sick of the harrassment and killed it! Personally it can work-key word "can" or "probably"
Getting targets such as Silver Dollars and Tinfoil Barbs will also help. Throughout my exp. I have always been able to keep 5 aggressive large fish in my 240 gallon with moderate problems. I have had
Umbee
Dovii
Buttikefori
P. Bass
Pike Cichlid
Red Devil, Barred Midas, Black Belt, Escondido, Kraussi, Jag, and Festae at one time or another. It all depends on planning and "luck"! Look at Terd's tank, if you read the list of fish he has you would think it to be impossible-but he got it to work. The fish you have listed are more than capable of taking care of themselves just get them at the same time and have a lot of caves.

Terd's tank is kind of what I had in mind, though I won't go so far as to attempt to have multiple breeding pairs. That to me is pretty amazing. I will probably give it a try and just be prepared to move somebody if I have to...what complicates it is the slow growth rate of V. argentea; I might try getting the arg first and growing it out with my more peaceful larger cichlids, that or replace the argentea with another vieja sp., synspilum maybe?
