Put it this way... Lizards aren't really for holding that much... When you see somebody handling a herp, its usually one of only a few species... Mostly bearded dragons, sometimes some Monitors / tegu's or iguana.

Id suggest looking for a lizard you don't mind watching... And just look at it.

Whoa.
Bearded dragons are interactive lizards.
They are among the most interactive and tolerant species today thus being so popular.
These are the opposite to say, Tokays (the odd one being tame) with beardies its the odd one being not!
Having had a few beardies myself I've had 'nasty' (more fearful than aggressive) ones and I've had the 'dog tame' ones, so have a few family members.

If you want a bearded connor, go for it. There good to look at and handleable every day.
Don't let decades of proof eg their popularity go right over your head..they are popular for a reason.
Good luck with whatever lizard you choose.

And I would add iguanas aren't for holding that much either, currently owning one and experiencing friends and families pets and rescue iguanas.
Iguanas are large powerful lizards that don't neccasarily enjoy handling but become tolerant as mine did, and then decided one day it wouldnt be.

However Beardies will sit on your lap/shoulder leg or arm 'watching' TV with you, they will crawl around on you and the room and most are not fearful when tamed with time.

A under under tank heat mat would be unnecessary for a bearded dragon. Since they are baskers...

SOrry, I always put UTHM's on my enclosures since I keep em in my room and dont like leaving the light on 24/7

in the UK an undertank heat pad will be neccasary for night time ..

Same for NY, it gets cold here. If oyu want to leave the heat lamp on constantly, go for it, but I dont like that since my enclosures are all in my room.

personally i dont think leaving a heat lamp on all night and day is 'natural' ENOUGH as they wudnt get heat from above at night
anyway thats just my opinion and the way i kept mine and it did the job fantasticly! (sp)

All animals need a day and night cycle...:irked: lol

i bread beards for some time and they are very interactive. When feeding you can use tongs and they will chase that thing all over the place. You can place crickets across the cage and watch them chase them down and hunt. They pay atention to you and they do an arm wave thing and head bobbing thats cool too.I sat my male across the room and then sat on the ground about 10 feet away and looked at him.I bobbed my head up and down a few times and then he did back to me.I did it again and he bobbed 2 times and then ran full speed across the room and rammed my foot then backed up and boobed his head about 10 times so i did the arm wave that the females do and he relaxed his posture so i picked him up and placed him back in with the females and fed him by hand and thats my story about me turning into a girl lizard for a few minutes, lol. But they are very interactive. The necks are short on them so when holding them its hard to get bit.Feed them good with lots of veg and like mentioned by other poster all the heat and lighting. If you can get them some sunlight in a out door protected pin now and then would be great too.Good luck what ever you get.
