At this place I volunteer, I just got to get trained on a garter snake and a mountain king snake, and I get to hold some slightly bigger ones later. They were so tame, and it makes me want to get some kind of a snake...even though my mom hates the idea, what good pet snakes are there?

BOA's, BOA's & More BOA's, and maybe a python or two hehehe.

My First snake(s) hmmmm, to tell the truth hmmmm ehh ummm, well if you most know since you twisted my arm and all wasn't just one snake but rather 27 adult proven breeders. I went in to this speciality shop and dropped like $$$$$ cash on the counter and said I'd like all of the Boids in that section, please! hehehe hahaha.

I got 2.3 Chondropythons, 2.5 Argentine Boas proven breeders, 2.5 Guyanian Redtails Boas all 7-12 ft in length, Proven Breeders, 1.2 Surinam Redtails Boas proven breeders (and the male had a skull & cross bones on his cage), 1.1 Peruvain Redtails proven breeders and 1.2 Bearded Dragons.

Yeah I had been going there for a few years watching them produce offspring
almost every year. And figured why should I go through all the trouble of raising them when I could make a fair offer an go from there.

Then I went back after I got most of everything squared away and bought there 1.1 Dumerils, 1.1 Madagasgar Ground Boas and 1.2 Amazon Tree Boas - what a mistake that was, Amazons have unreal teeth -OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!
:WHOA: :WHOA: :WHOA:

That's what I would do if I had it to do all over again, except I wasn't living at home.

What kind of snakes you like? Colubrids or boids? Do you like them skinny or to have some girth to them? What is your ideal size? Do you like active or inactive? Do you want them to be handable or display only?

Irish makes very good points there. All those questions should be asked, and also will mom, girlfriend, or wife freak out! ha ha ha ha ha ha

Yep, it should be noted that not every boids are thick, and not every colubrids are skinny. Some colubrids get to be around 12-14', while some boids only reach 1.5'. It all depends on what you want, then we can narrow down the species for you.

Sorry to break your heart Tequila, but I don't like boas. I prefer small snakes, like maybe a king snake. I want something that is pretty active, and that cane be tamed so that I can handle it as much as I can, without stressing it, ofcourse. I am pretty much looking for a hardy, begginner friendly snake.

So small in how? Some of those Kings can get to be quite long. If you are looking for something like 5' or less, there are Corn, certain species of Milk, Antaresia pythons, Sand Boas, Rubber Boas and many more. I am assuming you don't like big, and possibily thick, colubrids like bullsnakes/pine snakes, beauty ratsnakes, cribos and some others.

Yep, I'm not interested in the thick ones. You are right, king snakes can grow pretty long. Maybe I'll consider corn snake, I'll go see what my lfs has. I just don't want something too puny...I feel like it could get lost easily.

Corn snakes, Rubber boas, ROSY BOAS, and many kingsnakes are excellent starter snakes. Heck, even ribbon snakes. My first pet snake was a Ribbon snake - one of those $19.99 ones from PetsMart. He lived for seven years (I think it was a she, though) and a steady diet of goldfish made her sides turn a salmon color. Being a kid, handling her all the time, she became very, very calm, and would stay where I put her, just like a boa or python.
They are short lived, though, compared to the others (Colubrids) which have an avg lifespan of 9 to 22.
