I Want To Get Back To Plecos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started with Common Plecos which KEPT DYING! They kept dying for no reason, nothing hurt them, nothing attacked them. They were sucking on the algae, what the heck happened?

They must have a mice diet.
(According to some guy with a predatory common pleco)
Kidding don't follow this ^^

On what tank do you keep it? I mean what species are you keeping common plecs? For you to have 6 plecs died off with no apparent reason, I think there's a real big hole that you can't see in your water/diet/ understanding regarding plecs...

I don't want to sound mean or anything but how about chlorine? or huge water chem spikes? Having plecos in a under filtered tank would mean suicide, though you may see them in murky waters from time to time, spikes on a tank is in a whole different level than in the wild.

Typically fish don't die for no reason. Water quality, tank mates, and diet are a good place to start looking to find the cause of death. Plecos, especially larger specimens, need more than just the algae in the tank to feed off from. Regular tank maintenance is important to the health of any fish. Also plecos can be quite messy fish, and tank maintenance should be adjusted accordingly.

I think the easiest way to start with a pleco is a decent size brown BN pleco in a community tank. Maintain water quality and throw it some algae wafers from time to time and it should be pretty easy to keep. Zucchini is also good from some occasional variety.

A royal pleco might be a good second pleco. If you can get a healthy one in the 3 to 4 inch range, you can keep it similar to the BN for a while and grow it out to put in a bigger tank.

And some bits of cucumbers when I kept my gold nugget and polka dots. I've thrown in spirulina wafers, and strangely enough, my dead bichirs took them.(I used to have 2 bichirs, small ones.)

Sorry about the spam........

My plecos didn't care about them. Maybe the tank water quality was terrible. I'll try another pleco sooner. I have a community tank with a Jardini Arowana, Clown Knife, Synodontis Catfish, Ornate Bichir, and Senegal Bichir.

You said you know a lot about fish... I dont get it
