ich on my $$ expensive ebjd Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh geeze. The great salt debate again. I use morton's pickling salt. IT SAYS JUST SALT right on the box.(and it's 1.26/ 4 POUNDS) Anyone using "aquarium salt" has far more $$ than I do to throw away. http://www.mortonsalt.com/faqs/index.html#q8
Please note answer to the koi pond and freshwater aquarium question.

I have treated ich multiple times with this salt and my fish seem to love it. In fact I just dump it straight into the tank and some of my oscars will even chase it to the bottom and play in it. Good luck with your EBJD's

I use water softener salt, throw it in by the handful every hour or so until the salinty reaches and tests at 3 parts per thousand. Ich tomites will die upon hatching at 3ppt or above. Ich is not effected by any treatment when encysted on the fish, or dorment in the sand. It is only vulnerable when hatching out of substrate or hatching from the fish.
This is why treatment is extended even though not seen on the fish. Sorry if I'm being redundent.

Have you tested the Melafix in one of the ich cases you have?
Yea i have, it was reccomended by a friend and it worked beautifully. all of my fish which got it (3 got it at the same time) recovered perfectly. About 2 weeks after tho i had a really random ammonia spike which was weird cus i do 25% water changes weekly and my hob filter was running great (it's a 75gal biowheel on a 55gal tank). could the chemicals be related? the ammonia spike killed most of my favorite fish. One fish died, didn't think anything of it because it was old, then my aro, spiny eel, texas (which were all babies), snowflake eel and leopard puffer (temporary residents), 2 tinfoil barbs, and 1 silver dollar died the next day. that was a lot for the 55 but like i said it had a 75gal filter on it and the temporary residents were only there for a little while. could it have been the chemical? (sorry for getting a little sidetracked but if i just gave you REALLY bad advice i think we should find out so everyone can disregard it)

'Neck disease' is goiter. It is indeed a result of iodine deficiency. Strange but iodized table salt here in the Philippines is very cheap though rock salt is cheaper.

That's marine salt.

I repeat this is a myth.;) The additives in salt is minimal. If it were not, then it may not be suitable for human consumption at all. If it isn't, it would surely kill the fish. It is coincidental people blame the table salt for the fish deaths because they either forgot or are ignorant to dissolve the salt when adding it to the tank. Adding the salt carelessly to finish the dosage recommended is also another way to kill a fish. It's called osmotic shock.

It's up to you whether to believe it or not. Several members in Aquariacentral.com have discussed this many times and are on agreement table salt has proven itself useful and cost effective. I used iodized table salt several times for ich cases with no issues.

It is cool... just my two cents. In any case, very informative for me... in any case, if i really have no non-iodized salt one day, it is good to know that it is safe to use the other one. Thanx

well they hvnt died yet so yeah im using the iodized salt so yeah im doing half tank water changes its a high wide 2 ft tank so yeah but im not putting in the tablespoon recomendations b/c your tbspn might b bigger/smaller then mine
so i put jus over a teaspoon in !!!and i think it is working !!

lol... You dont litteraly use a teaspoon or a tablespoon for your measurement. Use a measuring cup. How many gallon is your tank? When I treat ich(which i havent in a few years) I do a big waterchange before I add salt. Then there is no need to do another waterchange for at least another week. I use 2 tsp per gal with my clown loaches and 3 tsp per gal with scaled fish. I raise temps as high as I can(below 90) and add airstone and or current via powerhead. I don't feed the fish but once every other day so waterchanging is not needed till treatment is done. When I dont see ich for a few days I will do a 15-20% w/c and begin to lower temps slowly. Maybe 2 days later another 15-20% w/c and lower temp some more. After a week of not seeing ich I go right back to my normal temp, feeding schedual and salt levels.

okay

thnx for that info i need as much info as i can get
and yes i ment a real tblspn haha i dnt hav measurement cups!!
lol
but it seems to be clearing up
