going to want to stay on the water changes. I am surprised the water does not look cloudy from a bacteria bloom from the ammonia. as stated stay on your water tests, what test kit are you using?
I’ve been doing 10% changes every other day since I noticed them rubbing but I’ll start doing 50%. I have the Tera 5 in 1 test strips and the API ammonia and ph kits

Yea get a full liquid api test kit and test daily. Add some bacteria to help populate the media. Water changes till it cycles....this will be the only way to get the tank ready and fish safe.

If u start the salt and heat now it’ll be over in about 3 weeks.

Best of luck.

as an FYI one of the signs of high ammonia is flashing (rubbing against something) ammonia irritates and well finally burn there skin, eyes, gills. so again keep up large water changes, I suggest 90 percent a day but that is me until you get 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite and a nitrate reading.

having a nitrate reading is a good thing, once cycled it well tell you when to do a water change , ideally between 15 ppm and 25 ppm.
