ID? does this look like a baby festae to you?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's got the bars and the spot on the tail, and basically the same shape as a Red Devil. I honestly think you might have Mayans, which are a really nice fish.

Lol I love when people ask a question and then fight it when everyone isn't saying what you want to hear. The look like juvie Red Devils and bought as Red Devils therefor are Red Devils.
Unfortunately mistakes do happen in life.
The OP mentioned Petsmart...
I've never seen a Petsmart in my area that never made any mistake.(including the people they hire to care for fish)
Hell I even got Clown loaches that were label as Tiger Barbs. LOL!!!
I was happy to get CL's @ the Tiger Barb prices!!! :headbang2
Not saying I agree with the OP, I see a RD/Mdias/Midevil too.

To the OP/darwinvsjesus...
Keep an open mind, many of the members who posted in your thread have a lot of experience with all the fish you have listed as being you fish.

BTW: My lil guy has a football shaped body too.
He looked a lil different than my other RD @ this size, that's why I asked since the color threw me off.

look up false red terror or mayan cichlid, looks like juvies of them, could be wrong but that wat i see esp. with the spot on the tail.

I've got a urop. in a growout as well. I actually really like the mayans. I've seen mayans of all sizes, these guys don't quite look right.

ALSO - i was mistaken in my first post. The manager told me these three [one got killed] came in a different bag

Maybe I'm completely wrong, which would be awesome.

Someone show me a red devil that looks like this. I know there's a variety with some barring. This is not that.

It's actually highly unlikely that it's really a festae. I'm not worried. I'll have them for certain soon enough. [I'm starting up three new tanks this month. plus a 5gal and 10gal. they don't count though].

The consensus is that it doesn't resemble a red devil, but sure it could be. I don't think so. I'll eat [vegan] crow, happily happily. you can even make a 'darwin is a moron' sign.

the pictures I took was when they were in the bag, after being moved. They've kinda changed a bit. They definitely have red on their ventral side. they definitely have blue spangles. I don't know if I can take a video, I'll try. But I'm taking pictures in a few hours when I turn the lights on.

even if they are red devils, that's cool. I like red devils. Amphis are probably my favorite cichlids.

and she was way off about the size, these fish are closer to 2.5-3 inches.

Really? Seems to me the consensus here is the exact opposite. I hope you do have festae but I'm pretty sure you do not. Either way good luck with the fish, I look forward to seeing them grown out.

they have colored totally differently now that they're comfortable. they have the eye spot with the ring around it, the red on the belly, the black dot at the base of the dorsal fin. I'm not going to die if it's not a festae, I did think they resembled them. My original question was really 'it doesnt look like a RD to me, what else could it be'.

I guess time will tell.
