I can tell you for a fact he is not Otopharynx lithobates... the guy who told you that is nuts... the color are close, but the stripes is what sets it off... The lithobathes have spots not stripes...

the other looks pretty good... maybe... what does everyone else thinkg?

When he was young they were not bars but not spots- They were more like a connected spots with a Hors bar-maybe two of the spots extended downwards so they could of been bar like patterns but he was still dark young, i noticed the markings when he lighten up alittle-and for a while he wouldnt except everynow in then and I wondered if it was the lights.

The guy didnt say mine was a Otopharynx- i saw some at a LFS in PA when i was coming home form work and the ones in the tank were small- they looked kinda like what I remebered mine when he was young- but it was more the spotty thing that I was think ing of...i didint think mine was, but as the juvi's at 1st look i thought maybe? That and because they change so much...

Im telling you guys I wouldnt be suprised if I went down stairs and my Hap/Peacock was purple then tonight was green- He has changed alot and fast...i havent had a fish do it that much before"thats why he got me intrgued"

The guy who had mine before I got him. sent me the email last night saying "it COULD BE A Sciaenochromis gracilis, becuase he had some, but his had alot of yellow"

So I dont know maybe?
http://www.malawimayhem.com/profile_show.php?id=76

look at this link- he got the shape, easy the color tho...mine got alot stronger blue face and still a darker body but if the yellow keeps washing out the dark blue it could look this way...could be a close match...

maybe he eally is a X maybe not a Hybreed but a single X...

I guess we will have to wait for when he wants to let us know who he is...
Damn fish keep me up all night

To be completely honest, I don't think the hap is M. gracilis. M. gracilis is a very long and narrow fish. Your fish is similar in build to an Aulonocara species with a S. fryeri or O. lithobates influence.
IMO it looks simply like a peacock x S. fryeri or peacock x O. lithobates or peacock x [fryeri x lithobates].
Personally I wouldn't go strictly by what your lfs guy told you. Many times it helps but there's also confusion beyond the retailer IME.
I've been sold wild sp. of Malawi cichlids by reputable retailers only to find they were not what I or the retailer thought they were. Honest mistake but it happens.
I really don't want to dump "hybrid" all over your thread but in all likelihood that's just what it is and not a bad looking one at that.

My .02, for what it's worth. :)

Yeah, thats all very true...and as I mentioned in the earlier post I didnt think they were the best of LFS eithers so it could be just that.

IMHO I find it better to think of a crossbreed ( X ) to not be so indelt verse a Hybreed
(X+X)
So thats what i mean when I say it that way-

i do agree with the thought that he could be very well a X 1st gen cross. I just had to make a honest atempt to ID before i degreat him to a Cross or even worst a Hybr. But hey it IS what it IS.
But that what I love about MFK
I can post this guy and feel confadent that I will get the best opions- i would trust MFK before any Retail LFS...LOL Sad I know, but true.

But I like to ask for mutipl replys so that its not just my word-Its been recearched to a degree.
But thats just me, i want to be honest and 100%sure

So thanks for your .02 i welcome it either way pos or neg-its how you grow in the RW so why not in the InterSpace of MFK.

thanks
:)
