ID help....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hate to messy up everyones "It's gotta be a Hybrid" day - but I believe that fish is a sub adult male Protomelas Fenestratus - I bought this one @ 1-2" he's 3 years old now approx 9-10" in length

How about we put the two photos next to one another for a quick comparison:

I'm not sure if you can see it or not but the body shape, body markings, and finnage are different. And based up the relative size and color of the OP's fish, I would say it is fully mature.

And unless the person that traded in the fish is contacted to get the ID of what he said it was (whether truth or lie), it is still a guessing game - which means you are no closer in your ID than the rest that claim it is a hybrid.

How is it that you know how hold the fish is and yet you nothing about its past? Hmm.... that's incredible. I know what I know, just not sure you know what you think you do...

I'd like to see how you explain the change in the dorsal fin color from having a light colored base with black submarginal coloring and white edging to a black base with white submarginal/edging.....

Alright, let me show some photos that are actually of Proto. fenestratus... and it will be obvious that the OP's fish is not what you claim it to be.

See the mouth structure? Protomelas have small mouths compared to their head and body. Look at the OP's fish... can you see the difference in size and shape?

And after looking all the various P. fenestratus from Ad's books, I actually doubt that you even have one... based on the colors that are appearing on yours versus the various locals I've looked at so far.

Thanks for all the replies....I was trying to get anyone to start a controversy! Its just a fish....after looking into this for a week now...and with MFK's help...Im satisfied that this is more than likely an Aulnocara Hybrid of sorts!

yea from what ive gathered this dude just thinks he is some type of fish guru. Getting pics off of google and then explaining to you why he is 100% about the fish you own... just callin how i see it.

LOL. its a beautyfull cichlid hybrid or not! If you like it then dont worry about knowing exactly what type of african cichlid he is. As long as he makes your tank look beautyfull and makes you happy thats all that matters.
