ID Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok that’s what I thought, the guy who sold them to me said they are 1m/2f so I was not sure. Are they going to be ok with 2m/1f or should I do something?

I know that it is not a P.salousi for a fact... I have a colony upstairs the males that are blue do not look like the blue one in the picture... not in any stage of dominance... I have a crap load of these guys... IF they were blue and turned yellow have to be kenyi

I just got these fish and was wondering if anyone could id them? Thanks

The fish in this post are IMO saulosi. They have the correct number of bars (6-7) from behind the gill plate to the caudal peduncle, correct shape of bar and correct coloration for male and female.
There's no speaking for quality and not every specimen will look the same. I also wouldn't assume sexes visually. A male can retain yellow coloration for quite a while before he changes color to blue, and a female can develop dark markings (in the fins usually). Don't count on egg-spots to sex your fish.
So far you have 2 males and 1 based on looks alone. You could vent them to confirm.

The second set of pictures provided by Lady G are M. lombardoi.

Ok, I believe the blue to be kenyi and the orange to be Pseudotropheus saulosi..I was thinking that we were just talking about the orange fish.

That's what I was thinking too (colors), when mine started changing colors it freaked me out a little..and found out the males do change to yellow. I ended up having 3 males and 1 female, the biggest male is starting to get more aggressive now, since they prefer a 1/3 m/fm ratio. I HAVE to get my 75 set up soon so I can get some more females to add w/ them.
Anyway, I don't know for sure what it is, but I don't think the orange is a kenyi either. I think it's body is to slender.
This is one before color morph, I don't have his picture since he changed to add with though. I will add a pic of my biggest male though.
I went to Malawi Maham and I think you are right about the Pseudotropheus

Both pictures in your post (orange & blue) are M. lombardoi.

Yes, I know what mine are...but thank you. I was just showing how they start out blue and if male will switch to yellow.;) That and that the body of cjtabares orange one did not look like them.

Ouch you hurt my eyes with that white writting:hypnotize

Sorry about the white i use the dark background and accidently changed the color of the text and when i made it white it keeps it white on both backgrounds. Thanks for all the info everyone, and if the tank stays as it seems with 2 males and 1 female should i upgrade tank size and try to buy like 5 more females or will they be ok? What size tank would i need to keep 8 of them?

A 30-40gl would house 8 of them just fine. You would be better of finding more females.
