A 30-40gl would house 8 of them just fine. You would be better of finding more females.
Agreed!! BTW what size tank are they in??
Good luck and keep us updated:)

They are in a 30gal (36x12x17) but unfortunatly when i woke up this morning one of the males had died the other two fish seem to be ok still eating and swiming around alot. i tested the water and every thing seemed in order. Dose this happen often i only got the fish last friday

Stress, aggressiveness from others, sick..really it's hard telling. Did you notice anything on him, raised abrasions, tore up fins. If your water tests turned out fine I wouldn't worry to much but keep an eye on the others to see if maybe one is bullying the others, these guys can get pretty aggressive toward each other, I think it is best to keep them slightly over stocked to help w/ aggressions. Others will disagree w/ this, but IMO it is better.

You only have 3 fish in the tank. Mbuna are highly social but highly aggressive fish. It's better to have more to disperse aggression, than a few where aggression can be focused on one, then another, till you're left with one.

thanks everyone. Dose any one know where i can get some P.salousi, any good online stores or if u or some one you knows sell them please let me know

I really can't suggest saulosi in anything less than a 55, since you need a nice sized group. Otherwise they just kill each other off.

I don't agree. While they don't grow as large as most mbuna they're also not the most aggressive. A 30 gallon tank is the smallest I would go with P. saulosi.
Of course bigger is always better, in any case. So if you ever planned on getting into larger mbuna or adding more than one species to your tank I'd look into the bigger size aquariums and 55gls is a good basic start. Although for the money, I've always found 50 gallon tanks to be quite a bit cheaper and they have a nicer footprint than a 55. The fish get more floorspace with a 50. For that reason I've never bothered owning a 55.

So you are telling me you would put at least 6 saulosi in a 30 gallon tank? I don't know why you think they are not aggressive. Sure they are no Kenyi, but they aren't yellow labs either. I had 7 and the alpha male was the boss of every mbuna I had including my afras, trewavasaes, zebras, and even my Melanochromis auratus. To top that off they do get to be 4 inches, and when all is said and done a 30 gallon just isn't a good tank for them.

Anyways I do second the 50 as being a nicer tank, though I don't know where you have seen a 50 cheaper than a 55? And to top it off getting a stand for a 50 is annoying. But of course I can say instead of getting a 55, a 75 is a ton better.

To each their own i guess.

50's, at least where I'm situated, are a lot easier and cheaper, to come by than 55's. Even 60's are. I can find standard 50's for $40 downtown and a standard 60 (4', none of that weird 3' long crap) we can find for $60-70 average. The stands may only be a little more difficult to come by simply because manufacturers don't bother labeling a stand specifically for a 50 or 60. A stand you'd use for a 75 would be perfect.
