Just picked him up the few days, he hasn't been eating. Tried chopped up krill, floating pellets, everything. He just sits there and stares at it.

feed the fish rosie red minnows at this point...do that until it's about 8" long or so. at this stage they can be tough to train onto non-live, and in this fish's condition, it's more important that it eats SOMETHING as opposed to being on live or non-live.--

The LFS I got it from had it eating krill. There are no rosy red minnows or fat head minnows where I live :(

Updates updates!

I just went around to my tanks and fed everyone, tried some brine shrimp, krill, and pellets again in my 100. The gar finally clamped on to the pellets and swallowed them with a bit of difficulty, and a small piece of krill!

Exciting!

good job

beautiful fl/spot gar
is there a crick in the back??
looks like it in the most reacent photo but usually the butt would be lower than the head not vice versa...

He's just a little underfed I think, I'll fatten him up. My cichlids leave him well enough alone, I gave him some top plants and he just hides up there with my baby Jag all day up there.

He'll eat lots now that he's eating krill and my pellets. He wolfed down three pellets before I was done with him.

good that he's taking some krill, keep him eating that but if you don't have feeder rosies then go with guppies...they won't start rotting if the gar misses them, and if you keep the tank well stocked for a while he will fatten up sooner and hopefully not end up with development problems. the krill alone even once or twice a day will not catch the fish up to appropriate growth.

also, keeping the young gar with cichlids is not the best idea as they can harass the fish (even at night when you can't observe it) and also compete for food. they will also counteract the feeder method as they will be more likely to catch the feeders first. if your priority is to get the gar back into good health, i would separate the cichlids, keep feeding krill, and provide a steady supply of feeder guppies at least for the next week or two. good luck--

spots on the tail coloration and general features make me believe it is definnently a fl/spot
