Is there any differentiation between species in terms of dorsal rays, finnage, etc?

that's what usually works, but not here :(

That's why you're always going to have debates about this. The only features used to define them are very vague. Even dead fish wont give you answers unless you look at DNA... and even then you might not get the right answer.

oh brother...why drag this out? Let's stay focused on the cyano-carpintis debate.

wiseman82, thanks for getting back to the informational aspect. I think an interesting question is how much variation you see 'within' those locales. Were they pretty consistent within each place you caught them?

WTH are you talking about? Drag what out? "oh brother"? Did my post stress you out? Honestly is that like reverse modesty???
i was actually talking to the OP............He is the one who made this thread (that is now a mess) The fish was ID'd after post 1. Sorry for posting in your thread.

I just like discussing how to differentiate these species, sorry I wanted to take the topic more in depth. Maybe you should just have your own thread where you I.D. fish in one post and then don't discuss things....

Right....Discuss what you want, but don't try to tell me what I can or can't post. I am sorry that I am not capable of getting as "in depth" as you....:screwy:

everything was going fine until somebody brought up the phd thing

:iagree: the markings on those fish look nothing alike. so were supposed to use only color alone to differentiate the two? thats a load of BS if i ever heard one. who knows what kinda of lighting or camera was used to take pics. heres my carpintis. sure, his color is different but thats due to the lighting camera. look at his markings. looks more like the OPs than the ones you posted

Your fish is a true carpinis. It looks more like the cyano I used to have, but maybe it is the ligting or a cross...
