I was actually referring to the top half of the caudal fin. From what i've seen, monos, ocells, orinos, etc. don't have those dots that you see on the upper half of the caudal fins of Temensis, pinimas, xingu, azuls, etc.

Is this assumption wrong?
 
I would think that is kinda iffy. Kelberi's have it them as well. Imma have to look more in to that.
 
But, A quick look at these photos....it seams your right.

But that's a almost/adulthood Photos. I wounder, if possible, to tell if baby size for the spangles on the top part of the tail is noticeable.

So it may have to do with both?
 
kinda/sorta....But I can't really go off of pictures....you know. But as ado mentioned, the spangles on the top of the tail, is a pretty good reference to the large type of cichla. But, I was also wondering if the same spangles appear on small ones to.

They appear on small tems, pinima, and azul as far as I have seen.
