the general rule is not to mix africans with americans so I would not mix them. Your jack dempsey is still young and looks stressed in the photo. He will darken up with age.

Thanks... The pet store was selling them as convicts next to the African Cichlids. They said I could put them with my Africans.
I used to have a 7" JD but he didn't have stripes like that. Guess it wouldn't be a good idea to put in a tank of Africans would it?

You can mix them up but like peeps have said generally not advised. Jack Dempsey gets a lot bigger than a lot of these fish plus africans like a different acidity I think than american cichlids.

African rift lake cichlids shouldnt be mixed with americans but there are none rift lake africans (not sure what there called) that can go in the same water paramounts as American cichlids.

Sometimes You may notice at different times of the day they display different features

Cichlids have a tendancy to chagne colors on a dime stressed or not...
