How big is the tank? Monos and scats are brackish to salt water species. They will not do well with the gouramis in the long run.

25g. why? From were I got the fish, the guy said its alright to keep the monos, scats and gouramis together.

Hate to tell you this...BUT the Monos and Scats are brackish water while the Gouramis are freshwater. I think the Gouramis and Goldfish will be fine together temperature wise as long as the you keep it around 75. I find that fancier goldfish does well at this temperature. BUT (again) the Gouramis are pretty aggressive and may tear up the Goldfish a bit.

That did happen to my two black moors and veil tails. I thought it was finrot.

What pet shop is this? Is it a chain? Usually, 90% of the time, they really don't have a clue. All they know is myths (fish will only get as big as their tank or 1"/gal rule) and what's freshwater and what's saltwater...sometimes. They don't know about aggression or brackish water.

WHAT!!!!

I guess i'll have to give the monos and scats back then. There is already 4 tank to take care of here. :nilly::nilly::nilly:

I think that maybe you should stick with 1 type of fish at a time. Learn everything about the care of gouramis and make sure they are taken care of. Then, you can try other fish. Monos and scats are brackish water fish and 5 gallons is way too small for them. If your LFS says that they can all live together and a 5 gallon tank is big enough for the monos and scats, I suggest either you learn about the fish yourself so you can know what to buy or find another LFS that can answer questions correctly. I know that buying different fish is exciting, but if your rush it, you will end up losing all of your fish. Hope this helps, The Doctor.

in my personal opinion, scats and monos are pretty hard... i've been into fish for 6 years now, and i can never seem to be able to keep them alive. i definitely think it's a bad fish for a newbie...

and as for the gouramis and goldies, i've heard of gouramis picking on the goldies to a point where the goldies would start losing their eyes...

I think that the best way for you to continue would be through research. Look up different species of fish on the computer, and pay attention to the detail, like water temp, pH, water hardness, salinity, origin, maximum size, temperament/behavior, tank size, and compatibility/tankmates.

The best thing for you to do is go to the pet store, write down the names of some of the fish that catch your eye, and then go home and look up those fish on the computer (make a chart if that helps you), and then pick and choose a couple of species that would work well together in your tank. Then, go back to the pet store and slowly start buying fish. Don't go spending all your money on fish at once, cuz chances are, if you add a lot of fish quickly to your tank, you'll end up throwing the tank off balance and losing all your fish. Take your time, be patient, and add fish slowly and carefully...

And remember, the best way to keep fish is to try to recreate their natural habitat. You can't try to add a brackish fish from the tropical waters of Australia with a freshwater fish from Japan's cold water ponds...
