Do you have a pic of yours? *err just realized I cant see your pic cause Im at work*
Mine is 100% S. maculatus. I regret selling him though.
I may buy him back cause I sold him back to the guy I bought him from and he goes through fish like I do!
Out of the seven different piranha species Ive owned consisting of 20 or so individual fish he was the most aggressive by far. He would always slam the glass when I walked into the room!
denticulatus is pygopritis, a complete difference genus, the 5 cuspid piranha, more like a pacu than piranha, have red fins when in good shape, complete different fish. SO ITS NOT DENTICULATUS.
It may not look exactly, just like humans all look a little different, depending on size, food, where it was collected, parents.. you notice all dalmations look a little different too right?
but the over all shape, coloration, structure of the fish, is a spilopleura complex fish, but seems to lack the heavy spotting, thus we call it maculatus. the one that JD had was 9" and your's is probably 4" I'd say just judging by the shape of the fish? So, either way, its a spilo complex fish we call maculatus, or if you think its different or special, that's ok too, as we embrace differences, and if your's is unique that is awesome! Its a beautiful fish, many maculatus display a purple sheen on top of the gold and green, one of the most colorful serrasalmus!
that does look like a maculatus, i have kept a few and have some pics somewhere at different sizes and it looks like that when smaller and can get a more pointed snout as they grow.
the pic you have is a little off probably as someone mentioned the size factor and if it is settled or not, the fin colouring is very dark and mac's usually have a black terminal band of the tail with a clear edge as you can see in my pic, this gets more prominent when less stressed and larger.
