this guy came into petco and they had no clue what it was, so i picked it up for a $2.50 price tag. now im still clueless as to what he is. can you guys and gals help?

it's colors vary widely. it doesn't act stressed, eats like a pig, and is chasing the geo's around. he is the only aggressive fish in the tank with no competition. and makes himself at home moving the gravel around the tank. if you saw him in the tank he doesn't act stressed.
I thought Mayan at first but the tailspot is too small, its red terror sized.

looks like my old red terror when i first bought it. It was stressed but acted fine and ate everything.
when it gets light in color it has about 4 or 5 spots starting at that one spot, and goes towards its head along the lateral line. and has golden bars, with red fins. before i moved him into the bigger tank he was very light in color. and always hid. he's very active now, but very dark in colors except when feeding.
