It looks carpintus to me, I do think using the term "Texas" is not appropriate because carpintus do not come from Texas, Mexico yes, but not Texas.
I believe using the Texas term for both is part of the reason these fish are cross bred without thinking, and only contributes to confusion.
Here is my H carpintus Chairel to compare.

I can't tell if the reddish base color of your fish is because of the lighting in the pic and reddish flower pot in the background, or is really its base color. Under a slightly different light, my fishes color appears slightly different.

:iagree::iagree::iagree: Let me ask a question. Those of you calling it a red TEXAS or a TEXAS, are you even listening to those of us that are giving you facts and proof that it is a Carpintis? Just asking. :)

Your fish are still a Carpintis, and not a red Texas or Texas. Check out the picks above and the pic of the Carp that I posted, OMG they have a red tint to the body, they both most be red Texas. :wall::wall:

I would say that is a Herichthys carpintis (Pearscale Cichlid). The common name used is Texas cichlid which gets it confused with the Green Texas. As far as the claims of Red Texas....only time will tell. It does have a little more red/orange coloration than normal but without knowing the source it is difficult to definitively say it is a Red Texas. Grow it out and keep us posted.

Thanks duanes and madness. I was wondering why this thread went three pages. I too couldn't tell if the red was coming from the pot or just a lighting thing.

NO, this is incorrect. The Carpintis is known as the Green Texas, why people call them that is beyond me. Thats why you all are confused. The common name TEXAS is for the Herichthys Cyanoguttatus.

Yep, what Madness said. A simple google research will churn out plenty of pages that will say Green Texas is H. carpintis and Texas as H. Cyanoguttatum. Don't see how people continue to get confused. >.<
