Another one to look at is L499.... but I don't know how often they come in. It looked like a Hypan to me also.... that is why I asked for the pictures of the mouth.

best pictures I can get for now

We really need a clear picture of the mouth with the teeth showing to be able to ID them, as you can see they can look similar..... no hurry just when you can get a picture of them on the glass is fine. If nothing else, when they get bigger they will be easier to see what they are...... at 1" some plecs look alike where they look different at a larger size. Working with pleco teaches you patients if nothing else. :)

Disagree - I have both and they look more like L134
Possible. Like Stuby said, many hypans, peckoltias, panaqolus ... look similar at a small size, and a picture of the mouth would be helpful, although at their current size it still might not be definitive. https://www.suedamerikafans.de/en/wels-datenbank/maulstudien/

I've been keeping/breeding p.compta for over 11 years now. Out of probably close to 1k L134s that I've personally had, I don't think I've seen a fry/juvie with a tail (or dorsal fin) like the fish in the original post. Markings vary, even sometimes at a small size, but the markings in the original post are much more consistently seen in multiple hypans.

Here's an old video of some of my grow outs

I've only been keeping/breeding L333 for almost 5 years. I don't think I have any pictures of my original 10 L333 when they were juvies, but they looked like the fish in the original post. I've since moved more towards black/white L333s these days due to the popularity of b/w over the gold/black hypans.

The L333 in this video are younger, and as mentioned b/w, but it gives you a sense of the tail shape.

My opinion is still a couple very nice looking Hypans

Which ever they are I am really happy with my purchase. I even went back to my lfs yesterday to grab the last one.

Can’t say I’ve bred thousands so you have me beat there. Congrats to that type of success!

I really have to work at the L134's to get them to spawn....... I've only bred them a few times in the last 8 years that I have had them. L333's on the other hand breed all the time for me.... so my L134's have been on strike from the start! :)
