ID SHARK GROWOUT THREAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine have stopped growing at about 4" and 7". Lately they have also stopped eating and I'm afraid they might die soon. They got hooked on Blood Worms and now won't eat anything else. I don't have enough money to be buying blood worms every few days so I don't know what do now. Just a helpful top don't feed them Blood Worms!

Blood Worms HELP them grow... I don't see how the bloodworms itself actually made them STOP growing... I would think that it would be the opposite... They have most likely stopped eating and growing because of a different factor...

I buy the "lunchbox" at petsmart. It's 15$ and has like 50 cubes of bloodworms. Part of having giant fish is having a giant food expense. If its too much to buy frozen, I think anyone can buy a Rubbermaid and a bag of topsoil to grow their own worms.

Agreed 100%. If you do not have money to feed your monsters... well... you probably should have thought about that BEFORE you got the fish...

I have not seen "the lunchbox" at a petsmart before... is it just like in the freezer where they sell frozen beefheart and brine shrimp etc.?

They are in a 220 with great filtration and I have a good water change schedule.
My Filtration: 1 Cascade Canister filter (I don't know the full name but its the largest one made), 1 Penguin Biowheel 350(I think, it has two bio wheels), 1 Aquaclear 110, and a 20 gallon sump that does about 500 GPH.

I offer New Life Spectrum Pellets daily and usually every other day I feed shrimp, Tilapia, Algae Wafers, and Hikari Cichlid Gold. I don't know why they don't eat any of this. They used to eat it all but now won't take any of it.

Not to derail, but I have a question, I just boguth an ID Shark off a member from here thats around 12", he claimed it was around 3 years old. I know that is pretty small compared to how big i imagine they would be atround that age. It was in a 220g for most of its life from what i know, so it should be badly stunted. Do some just not reach thier monster size?

I've never personally seen one hit 2'. Much like the petsmart Senegals, I think the size has been bred out of the cheap ones.

Ah, in my original post i mean should not be stunted ha.

but thanks for the quick reply, that makes sense. Im just not very familier with them. Just now starting to come out of my Bichir/Arowana shell!

Pangasianodon hypophthalmus are omnivorous, but mostly vegetation/plant matter. They do great in captivity with flakes and small pellets. They usually are not picky eaters, but they are skittish. When introduced into a new tank/environment they usually take a while to acclimate and start feeding regularly. Once they get their appetite back they eat constantly and grow very fast. From my personal experience some like current some don't. It's a toss up as each fish has a different personality. Blood worms are great for majority of not all juv fish. It helps them grow. They do well/better in small groups. They are amazing cats to keep, happy cat keeping.
