ID the new fish please?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ya know, mike dunagan might be right. My new cichlids looked really pale at the store and it took them almost 2 full days to become the deeper colors that they are now. (especially my JD.)Thinking dogballs and Red Devil are right though, unless it gets those tiny speckles all over it, then mike's right..... confused ? I am ! Good Luck with that ! :D

It is difficult to tell when stressed in a bag, does it have dots all over it now that it is no longer stressed in the bag? If so it is a Nimbochromis polystigma. If it is not got a lot of dots on it then I would say it is Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus. The coloration of the pattern is not right for a venustus. They are more of green camo. Livingstonii as pictured above is more silver. The two I listed above get more of brown to them like yours. It is for a fact Nimbochromis.

+1. 100% sure it's not a venustus.

Espeso, please give us all an update :D. Does your fish have a bunch of speckles on it? Got $$$ riding on this one, gotta see if mike dunagan or if Red Devil and dogballs are correct on the I.D. of your fish! (Kidding about the $$$ part.) :D:popcorn:

pressure on with the money on the line yikes.... I am doubting it will have the little spots and am leaning more and more towards my second guess Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus the more I look it it reminds me of my old pair I had two years ago. I use to keep most of nimbos until I got into tangs more.

I think Im gonna go with mike on this one, Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus.
Its body is much to slender to be a livingstonii, polystigma or venustus.
Also it has a much larger mouth than a venustus.

Lake Malawi cichlids can be tricky, even though you can identify another fish that looks exactly the same it still might be another species sometimes.

Ok, let's settle this once and for all. Let's ask for a DNA sample.:D This will solve everything, right?:D Hmmm...probably not....:popcorn::ROFL:

No speckles and the fish passed away today. It got in a fight with a tank mate and tried jumping. Fish hit the Lid and from their on things went down hill. here the picture of when it was out of water.

But thanks for the help guys.

Ps. It had the same coloration and marks as in first pictures.
